Department Summary

VFX is delivered across multiple disciplines, channels, clients and products. We create animated characters, full computer-generated product configurators with millions of variations, computer-generated products with AI generated images, photo-real, real-time environments, water simulations, digital twins and much more.

The department includes all the usual computer graphics disciplines from modellers, animators, lighters to pipeline developers and producers, both onshore and offshore, supporting global and local client needs.

What does a ‘FX Lead’ do at Hogarth?

Role

The FX Lead is responsible for creation of complex simulated effects such as fire, smoke, water, destruction, magical elements, cloth, groom and other procedural animations in Houdini in the Hogarth USD based pipeline.

Responsibilities

• Simulation: Define and build procedural systems for creating and scaling FX, CFX, Cloth, Groom and related disciplines to be used in production with an emphasis on photo-realism, accuracy, detail, and function, and provide tools for manual adjustments of parameters at scale.
• Procedural workflow set ups using publishing and dependency.
• Quality Control systems: Eye for detail and able to build QA procedures to ensure the highest quality before release of assets.
• Collaborate closely with CG/Department Supervisors, Lighting Leads, Compositing, and Animation departments to ensure FX integrate seamlessly into the full shot.

Requirements

• Good eye for detail and real-world reference when recreating simulations.
• Strong understanding of simulation workflows and decision trees using SideFX Houdini.
• Proficiency in Python scripting for procedural tools and pipeline integration.
• 3+ years experience in managing FX and Simulation within 3D environments in a mature pipeline. Exposure to USD pipeline and workflows.
• Ability to receive and give creative feedback from supervisors and to the team.
• Ability to communicate complex technical requirements to pipeline developers and other technical teams.
• Experience with ML tools would be a bonus.
