Job Description

Hoare Lea is a human‑centric and planet‑conscious engineering consultancy. We provide a wide range of engineering and consultancy services, including acoustics, air quality, building services (MEP), fire, lighting, security and sustainability to name but a few. Together, our highly skilled teams use technical expertise and problem‑solving skills to bring buildings to life. We ensure that whatever the building, its design is outstanding, and its operations meet the needs of the communities it serves.

We are as committed to inclusivity and flexibility as we are to sustainability and high performance. In joining Hoare Lea, you will experience a business that enriches your knowledge, supports your wellbeing, and welcomes your individuality. You\’ll have the opportunity to participate in our 9‑day fortnight scheme, our thriving community groups (ethnicity, families, gender, LGBTQ+, and neurodiversity), our varied social and networking events, and our extensive professional and technical development schemes. We also offer an extensive benefits package, including private medical cover, electric vehicle salary sacrifice scheme, stock options, and up to 30 days of annual leave.

Whatever your ambitions or circumstances, our aim is to enable everyone to develop their knowledge, give their best, and enjoy what they do.

About The Role

We have an exciting opportunity for a Principal or Associate Mechanical Engineer to join our Data Centre and Mission Critical team. Data centres are increasingly important to the economy, with the technology that drives them changing at a blisteringly fast rate, and our Mission Critical team assists clients in navigating the evolving requirements of this sector.

Our experience covers everything in the Data Centre & Mission Critical sector – from complex live plant upgrades, close control, data halls, financial‑sector trading floor environments, critical engineering, and due diligence reviews of existing facilities, you will get to work on projects across the UK, Ireland and Europe.

Working collaboratively with our specialist groups, you will be joining a collaborative, knowledgeable, highly engaged team who love what they do. Our teams have a wealth of experience and offer a positive, supportive and flexible culture.

Working alongside the Project Leader, you will be facing clients, responding to our clients\’ needs, developing designs and producing reports, specifications and guidance or overseeing testing and commissioning activities. We work closely as a team to ensure we achieve the best results and deliver a consistent, high‑quality service for our clients.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work with the team leader to help monitor fee expenditure, resources and work delivered.
  • Mentor and support our ‘next‑gen’ professionals, including apprentices and graduates.

About You

  • Proven experience working as a Mechanical Engineer or closely related role, with a track record delivering on Mission Critical and Data Centre projects.
  • Experience with modern technical delivery processes and use of relevant software/tools such as Revit, BIM and AutoCAD.
  • Demonstrable experience working with clients/contractors/architects in a design‑oriented / consultant role.
  • Self‑awareness, an open mind, and a spirit of generosity.
  • Experience in supporting others to develop knowledge, skills, and confidence.
