About the role

We have a brand-new opportunity for a Sustainability Consultant or Senior Sustainability Consultant to join our team, based in either Bristol, Plymouth, or Exeter. It's an exciting time to be part of our broader Sustainability Discipline which has a presence in every Hoare Lea office across the country. We provide a diverse sustainability consultancy service promoting sustainable development for a range of projects, across all sectors. Our Sustainability Discipline is an industry leader in its approach to sustainable design, construction and building on achieving ever greater standards of environmental sustainability, the discipline thrives on its dynamic, innovative, and ambitious working culture.

In this key and varied role, you can expect to:

  • Have a focus on and provide expertise in whole life carbon assessments and Circular Economy for the built environment.
  • Develop site specific whole life carbon appraisals using in house tools and OneClick LCA software.
  • Develop site specific BREEAM Mat 01 appraisals.
  • Lead focused workshops with design teams and Clients to:
    • Guide and agree on whole life carbon targets.
    • Agree strategies to reduce whole life carbon emissions.
    • Agree strategies to embed Circular Economy as part of design and operational decisions.
  • Lead focused workshops with Contractors to review the whole life carbon assessment and guide them in achieving the agreed targets, undertaking construction stages monitoring and reporting.
  • Lead focused whole life carbon and circular economy workshops with Local Authorities where necessary, e.g. as part of design review or planning approvals.
  • Support and/or lead in house Technical Excellence communities in advancing the firms knowledge in this area to allow us to stay at the cutting edge of knowledge in our industry.

Whilst this role will be whole life carbon focused, you can also expect to get involved in other core sustainability consultancy deliverables, including:

  • Delivery of environmental and wellbeing assessments (such as BREEAM, WELL, HQM, etc) from early design stages through to project completion/post construction.
  • Undertake a range of modelling and assessments, including building performance simulation including Part L, operational energy estimates, and overheating.
  • Support and/or lead the development of energy and sustainability strategies with our clients to lead sustainability innovation on new and existing developments.
  • Support the training of junior members of the team e.g. in workstream delivery, consultancy and project planning.
  • Opportunity to undertake project leadership for the Discipline on small to medium scale projects, encompassing whole life carbon or circular economy workstreams, and/or including the broader portfolio of works the sustainability Discipline offers.

As well as project-related work, you would have the opportunity to engage directly with industry, undertaking research and development studies, and authoring industry guidance.

About you

You are likely to have some knowledge and competence in a selection of the following fields.

Core competencies

  • Whole life carbon assessments (including embodied and operational carbon assessment) – using OneClick or other methodologies.
  • Core understanding of industry guidance around whole life carbon, which should include (but not limited to), the following:
    • RICS Whole Life Carbon Professional Statement v1 and v2.
    • UK Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard.
    • UK Green Building Council.
    • IStructELETICircular Economy Statements.
    • Net zero carbon strategies.

Advantageous competencies

  • Energy and sustainability strategies for planning and design development.
  • Environmental and wellbeing appraisals/assessments, i.e. BREEAM, WELL, fitwel.
  • Energy performance modelling - Apache.
  • HVAC, Building Regulations Part L, NABERS, Passivhaus.
  • Delivery of successful planning applications and experience of local authority collaboration. Experience in the London market would be particularly advantageous.

  • Experience working within the built environment sector.
  • Already working within a sustainability or engineering consultancy, you will be looking for a new challenge within a practice at the very forefront of our field.
  • You will bring expertise (with a degree in engineering / science, and experience in the field) and a passion for creating sustainable solutions.
  • You will relish being part of dynamic team within a progressive and well-respected firm.
  • You will have good communication skills and an enthusiasm for working within a team environment.
