About the role

We have exciting opportunities for Fire Engineers at all levels (Engineer to Associate Director) to join our Bristol, Glasgow, London and Manchester offices. Hoare Lea’s Fire Engineering Group is a leading team of experienced fire safety experts, many of whom are Chartered Engineers through the Institution of Fire Engineers. Being part of one of the UK's largest building engineering consultancies, we benefit from collaborating with some of the best engineers in the business, with access to state-of-the-art technical support, and have the opportunity to work on some of the UK's largest and most high profile projects as part of a multi-disciplinary team. However, the fire team also works independently on fantastic projects, with many in our team having developed long-term relationships with many great clients.

A particular area where we have invested heavily is training and research. We have numerous research groups within the team to ensure that we remain at the cutting edge of our discipline; this includes computational and numerical modelling, emerging fire risks, new techniques and even fire testing – we recently led the design and implementation of two of the world’s largest ever cross laminated timber (CLT) compartment fire tests in France, to successfully validate our detailed calculations for a highly sustainable timber office building project.

In addition to Hoare Lea’s best-in-class training, the fire group have developed extensive additional training and development opportunities – weekly training sessions for everyone, regular training away-days, innovation days and access to external training and conferences. We place a particular emphasis on enabling our team to achieve Chartered Engineer status – we have developed a programme for this and numerous fire engineers have obtained their CEng with us over the years. This is all enabled by our very experienced and highly qualified team. We are active in a number of key organisations such as the Society for Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE), Smoke Control Association, BSI Group and Institution of Fire Engineers.

In this key and varied role, you can expect to:

  • Work with colleagues within Hoare Lea as part of a multi-disciplinary team, and also have a significant portfolio of long-term external clients.
  • Attend design team meetings, design workshops, client meetings and site meetings.
  • Travel to clients or projects in the UK, and occasionally internationally, according to project demands.
  • Work on software analysis tools – evacuation, smoke and fire modelling, heat radiation models and structural fire modelling.
  • Produce design deliverables including specifications, drawings, and schedules.
  • Interact regularly with internal and external stakeholders, ensuring a communicative, collaborative and timely approach to delivery.
  • Support timely invoicing, debt chasing, management of WIP and forward workload/resource planning for your own projects.
  • Mentor and support our ‘next gen’ professionals including apprentices and graduates.

About you

  • Experience working within a fire engineering consultancy role.
  • A relevant degree or equivalent qualification in Engineering, Building Services, Maths, Architecture, or Physics, with a keen interest in Fire Engineering.
  • You will have a good technical knowledge in the primary discipline of fire safety design.
  • You will be IT literate with a working understanding of fire modelling software analysis tools.
  • You should have excellent communication skills and an interest in working in a team environment.
  • You will have the ability and commitment to effectively deliver to demanding timescales and have good organisational and planning skills.
  • Chartered engineer status is required for roles above Associate.
