Join HMRC as a Senior Software Developer and make a real impact! HMRC Chief Digital Information Office (CDIO) is moving to a products and platforms model. This will be reflected in our ways of working and our roles. The emphasis of this role is to include platform technology-specific ownership and responsibility.

The Senior Software Developer role sits within HMRC's CDIO Chief Engineering and Platform Office, in the Power Platform Centre of Excellence. This team is part of the wider M365 Centre of Excellence and is responsible for promoting, administrating and supporting the use of HMRC's Power Platform to maximise value and return on investment.

The role is central to delivering technological change while ensuring operational stability. It involves leading the design and delivery of Software Solutions, maintaining and enhancing existing applications, and driving improvements to reduce technical debt and ensure compliance with legislation and HMRC standards.

This position requires a strong understanding of the software development lifecycle and involves applying knowledge of cloud platforms and enterprise architecture to deliver solutions that meet our organisational goals. The role combines technical leadership with hands-on development and collaboration across teams.

Responsibilities
  • Leading the design and development of software products to support Power Platform administration and wider M365.
  • Ensuring operational stability and performance of existing applications.
  • Implementing changes to maintain compliance and improve efficiency.
  • Working with stakeholders to deliver secure, effective and sustainable solutions.
  • Supporting HMRC's strategic direction by adopting cloud technologies and modern development practices.
Person specification

As a Senior Software Developer, your daily duties may include:

  • Developing software using the Power Platform, C# or other high-level programming languages.
  • Mentoring junior developers while investing in your own learning.
  • Driving the adoption of modern technologies, including cloud services, microservices, robotics, and low/no-code solutions to enhance internally developed solutions.
  • Leading projects through the full software development lifecycle, providing progress updates to stakeholders via demonstrations and documentation.
  • Designing and writing detailed test scripts, supporting technical testing and User Acceptance Testing with business stakeholders.
  • Producing clear technical documentation and accessible system navigation guides and supporting the creation of help tools.
  • Reviewing software to ensure compliance with security standards and design principles, highlighting any deviations or risks.
  • Collaborating with colleagues across CDIO to deliver bespoke tools and support wider digital initiatives.
  • Working with the support team to create knowledge articles, resolve complex issues, and take ownership of cases escalated beyond first-line support.
  • Preparing for and attending stakeholder and team meetings, which may involve occasional travel and overnight stays.
Essential Criteria
  • Significant experience developing in a high-level programming language (such as C# or Java) and .NET technologies.
  • Strong understanding of SOLID principles, test-driven development and design patterns such as MVVM and MVC.
  • Experience in consuming and integrating RESTful APIs.
  • Experience of building scalable solutions in Power Platform.
  • A good understanding of Dataverse, connectors and data integration patterns.
  • Experience of application lifecycle management, including development, testing, deployment, live running, and decommissioning.
  • A solid understanding of security practices, GDPR and data protection practices.
Desirable Criteria
  • Experience of building modern web interfaces including use of front-end libraries such as React.js.
  • Experience in communicating technical and non-technical concepts to stakeholders, both verbally and in writing.
  • An awareness of Assistive Technology standards and regulations.
  • Experience of sharing knowledge and best practice and critically evaluating own and others' work to successfully implement software development best practices.
