Discover a career in your hands at HMRC. Whether you're seeking purpose, growth, or a workplace that gives you a true sense of belonging, hear from some of our employees as they share their story about what it's really like to work at HMRC.
Please note, this recruitment process will include a face-to-face interview conducted at HMRC Regional Centre, 3 New Bailey, Salford. The Data Science team sits within HMRC's Chief Digital Success Profiles.
When answering, you will be required to provide a specific instance from your career which demonstrates the Technical Skill in question. You would be advised to prepare specific examples from your career in advance. Using the STAR format will help you to structure your answers. You would be encouraged to prepare demonstrable examples of your experience ahead of the interview to ensure meaningfulness and completeness.
HMRC use AWS, Posit (R and Python) and GitLab, amongst other tools in our Data Science technology stack. You will be asked to provide a five-minute presentation entitled "Demonstrating effective use of technology to deliver innovative solutions for the business." You can talk to pre-prepared slides (on paper or via laptop) or give a solely verbal presentation.
Sift and interview dates to be confirmed.
After submission of the first stage of your application, you will be invited to complete a Civil Service Numerical Test. If you successfully pass the test, you will be invited to complete the final stage of the application. Please complete the online tests as soon as possible (within 24-48 hours is recommended) and ensure you allow sufficient time to complete and submit the final stage of your application after submitting your online test. The deadline for both the test and the application is 13/05/2026 at 23:55.
When an applicant has a banked score they are not asked to retake the same test, providing it is set at the same job level, and within the same system. Scores will be banked for six months, or until a new score benchmark is applied, whichever is sooner. This means that if a candidate applies for another vacancy at this grade they may not have to retake the test within that time, and their previous score will be used for the new vacancy.
Please take extra care to tick the correct boxes in the eligibility sections of your application form. Mistakes sometimes happen but if you contact us later than two working days (Monday-Friday) before the vacancy closes, we may not be able to reopen your application for you. If you do make a mistake with your eligibility form, or have withdrawn yourself in error and need your application reinstated whilst the campaign is still live, please contact us via email.
