People and Place Group (PPG) sits at the heart of HMRC, delivering colleague services, managing workplaces, and supporting continuous improvement. The Estates & Locations Finance Team works with Estates and Programme colleagues to ensure HMRC has the right, modern workspaces to support its people and services.
As a Finance Analyst, you will support the Finance Business Partner (FBP) team by delivering financial management, analysis, and insight across the Directorate. Support the production of budgets, forecasts, and monthly reporting, including variance analysis and commentary. Provide financial analysis to identify risks, pressures, and opportunities, supporting decision-making. Deliver accurate financial reporting and ensure strong financial control and data integrity. Support savings initiatives, business cases, and ad hoc analysis requests. Work with stakeholders to improve understanding of financial positions and cost drivers. Assist in monitoring workforce and non-staffing costs, highlighting key trends and issues. Build effective working relationships and provide a responsive, customer-focused finance service.
This role requires a motivated and well-organised individual to provide high-quality financial analysis and customer-focused support across HMRC Estates, working closely with business areas and finance colleagues. The postholder will focus on financial management and analysis, supporting the effective control, reporting and forecasting of Estates budgets and activities. You will report to a SO/G7 Finance Business Partner, and you will support a defined portfolio of Estates activity. You will be a key member of the Estates Finance Business Partnering team and the wider Finance, Planning, Performance & Risk (FPPR) community within People & Place Group (PPG), contributing to the delivery of accurate financial information and strong financial discipline across the business.
Key Responsibilities:
- Building and maintaining strong working relationships and effective communication with a wide range of stakeholders, including Finance colleagues, Estates operational teams, Project Managers and Assistant Directors.
- Undertaking detailed analysis of Estates expenditure, forecasts and outturns.
- Ensuring the integrity and accuracy of financial transactions by applying appropriate checks and controls within financial systems.
- Delivering month-end activities, including preparation of accurate in-month outturns, accruals and full-year forecasts for a defined Estates portfolio.
- Providing clear explanations to senior managers for significant variances between forecasts and actuals, including identification of risks and opportunities.
- Preparing and maintaining management information and reports that provide meaningful and insightful financial analysis for senior managers and decision-makers.
- Responding to ad-hoc financial queries from stakeholders in a timely and professional manner.
- Supporting the SO/G7 Finance Business Partner in the preparation and assurance of Estates business cases and investment proposals.
- Supporting improvements in financial understanding and capability across Estates by promoting good financial processes and controls.
- Acting as an active member of the HMRC Estates Finance Team and the wider FPPR finance community within PPG.
Essential Criteria:
- Strong analytical and numerical skills, with the ability to interpret complex financial data and provide clear, evidence-based insight.
- Experience of using financial systems and Microsoft Excel to analyse data, identify trends and support decision-making.
- Ability to produce accurate financial reports, forecasts or management information, ensuring attention to detail and data quality.
- Demonstrate the ability to build effective working relationships across a diverse range of stakeholders.
- Have a strong customer service ethos.
- Have experience of working in a busy financial environment and delivering work accurately to deadlines.
Desirable Criteria:
- Experience of Estates, property or facilities related financial management.
- Qualified, Part Qualified or studying towards a professional Accountancy qualification.
- Understanding of public sector finance practices, processes and controls.
