Pass a medical and fitness assessment, meet the eyesight standard in both eyes, and meet a suitable standard of hearing for safety reasons.
Whilst tattoos are permitted, including those that are visible, they must not be deemed offensive, discriminatory, violent, or intimidating. Facial tattoos are generally not acceptable, except for cultural, religious, or medical reasons.
Everyone training to be a prison officer needs a suitable standard of hearing without hearing aids. To work in a high security prison (category A), you must have been a resident in the UK for the last 3 years.
You will be invited to complete stage 1 of the online test, assessing basic judgement and numerical skills. If you pass, you\’ll proceed to stage 2, a task-based assessment. Successful completion of online tests and the assessment centre will lead to a medical and fitness test, including eyesight, hearing, and basic health screening.
Pay and Benefits
The initial training is 37 hours a week. After training, you can choose to work 37, 39, or 41 hours a week, with your salary reflecting your weekly hours:
- 37 hours = £33,746/year
- 39 hours = £35,875/year
- 41 hours = £38,003/year
All salary figures include allowances. The standard workweek is based on 39 hours per week. Benefits include:

Job Offers and Recruitment Process
This is a merit vacancy. Successful candidates at the online assessment centre will be added to a merit list for 12 months, with offers made to the highest scorers when positions are available. If unsuccessful as a prison officer, you may be offered an operational support grade (OSG) role.
