Overview

Our Modern Languages Department is seeking to appoint a native speaker of French to the post of part-time, term-time Language Assistant to conduct conversation lessons in French, principally with pupils in Years 10 to 13, for 8 hours per week.

The Portsmouth Grammar School is a leading co-educational school located in the historic heart of Portsmouth. We are very much a family school known for excellent teaching, superb pastoral care and wide-ranging co-curricular opportunities and offer an education across the age range from Pre-School to Sixth Form.

The Modern Languages Department is seeking to appoint a native speaker of French to the post of part-time, term-time Language Assistant to conduct conversation lessons in French, principally with pupils in Years 10 to 13.

The post is for 8 hours per week, term time only, and the start date will be as soon as possible.

French is one of three languages taught to GCSE and results are very good, with many pupils going on to study the subject in the Sixth Form. The department is well-equipped with one language laboratory which is fully computerised with multi-media facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct conversation lessons in French with pupils, principally in Years 10 to 13.
  • Support the Modern Languages Department during term time (8 hours per week).

Qualifications

  • Native speaker of French.

Application timeline

The closing date for receipt of applications is midday on 25 September 2025 and interviews will be scheduled to take place on the school site in the week commencing 29 September 2025 with a provisional interview date of 30 September 2025.

Candidates are encouraged to apply as soon as possible as early applications are welcome and we reserve the right to interview and appoint prior to the closing date.

The post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974. The School is therefore permitted to ask job applicants to declare all convictions and cautions on a self-declaration form in advance of attending an interview (including those which are ‘spent’ unless they are ‘protected’ under the DBS filtering rules) in order to assess their suitability to work with children.
