Winchester College is looking for a dedicated and energetic Grounds Assistant to join our busy Grounds and Gardens Department. This dynamic role involves working across both our sports turf and formal garden areas, helping to maintain our beautiful campus to the highest standards.

The Role

You\'ll be an integral part of a 10-person team, reporting to both the Head of Grounds and the Head Gardener. This varied position ensures our extensive grounds and gardens are always pristine for school activities and events.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Grounds Maintenance: Performing essential duties like grass cutting, hedge trimming, shrub pruning, weeding, and leaf clearance across the campus.
  • Horticultural Operations: Getting involved in tasks such as ground preparation, planting, turfing, seeding, and general pruning to enhance our gardens.
  • Event Support: Collaborating with games and events staff to ensure sports pitches, equipment, and gardens are ready for school and third-party events, especially when team members are absent.
  • Safety & Standards: Adhering to Health & Safety regulations, understanding risk assessments, and ensuring all work is carried out safely and efficiently to the highest possible standards.
  • Upkeep & Maintenance: Assisting with the care of trees and major hedges, clearing leaves and weeds, and ensuring all machinery and equipment are correctly stored and maintained.
  • Site Improvement: Carrying out minor works to continually improve the aesthetic and functionality of the College grounds.

About You

We\'re seeking a self-motivated individual who is reliable, detail-oriented, and capable of working both independently and as part of a team.

  • Previous experience working in a horticultural or grounds maintenance setting.
  • Honest, reliable, and self-motivated with good organisational skills.
  • Capable of working under pressure and using your own initiative.
  • A strong awareness of Health & Safety, with a willingness to undergo relevant training.
  • Good physical fitness and comfortable with tasks like climbing ladders.
  • Hold a full UK Driving License.

What We Offer

  • Start Date: As soon as possible.
  • Working Hours: Full-time, 40 hours per week. We offer reasonable flexibility in working arrangements to meet the College\'s needs, which will include some weekend work on a rota basis, plus occasional evenings for sporting fixtures or College events.
  • Salary: £25,529.00 per annum (gross), depending on your qualifications and experience.
