We have an opportunity for a Litigation Paralegal in HMRC’s Solicitor’s Office and Legal Services based in our Manchester Regional Centre. 6 month initial contract. The Solicitor's Office is an integral part of HMRC, headed by the General Counsel and Solicitor, Alan Evans, and includes approximately 350 lawyers who advise on legal issues arising from HMRC’s policy and operational work and conduct the Department’s litigation. Our legal work is high quality and covers a broad range of subjects, including tax, public law issues for HMRC, human rights, administrative law, freedom of information, criminal law, benefits and credits, and commercial law.
Our paralegals are an integral source of support for our lawyers. We are looking for intellectually capable, highly motivated self-starting people with excellent oral and written communication skills. You need:
- a legal qualification and strong legal research skills, ideally with a good working knowledge of legal databases such as LexisNexis and Westlaw.
- previous Litigation experience.
- to be very well organised and able to manage a busy and varied workload.
- to be proactive and flexible.
- excellent IT skills (word/excel/outlook).

HMRC paralegals work in varied and challenging teams in HMRC Legal Group. This post sits within HMRC Legal Group, Litigation Paralegal Support. The Paralegal Support Teams work a range of litigation, comply with Tribunal/Court Directions, and support lawyers with more complex litigation.
As a paralegal, you will have responsibility for supporting lawyers dealing with cases from commencement of proceedings through to hearing and conclusion at Tribunal or Court. The successful applicant will be responsible for delivering casework, which can include:
- Drafting and serving notices and applications to be served on the Tribunal.
- Drafting and sending case correspondence.
- Preparing chronologies.
- Identifying relevant documents and producing bundles.
- Attending Tribunal hearings.
- Drafting statements of case and other key documents.
- Providing legal support to experienced senior colleagues on complex cases.
- Some administrative duties.
There is also an expectation for you to quickly grasp the specialist processes that are key to the delivery of work in the area to which you are appointed.
