Join HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) as a Senior Enterprise Architect within the Enterprise Architecture – Standards, Tools and Artefacts team. The team works across one of Europe’s largest and most complex IT estates, driving modernization and transformation.

As a Senior Enterprise Architect you will shape HMRC’s technology strategy, create and evolve strategic roadmaps, influence policy, and ensure architectural decisions align with organisational goals.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive IT architecture strategy by setting standards, technical policy, and direction for HMRC’s IT estate.
  • Create and manage reference architectures, define metadata and taxonomies, and ensure alignment with strategic goals and best practices.
  • Support solution design to maximise technology investments, drive innovation and promote standardisation and adoption of enterprise architecture tools and practices.
  • Balance governance, compliance, flexibility and streamline processes for efficiency and scalability.

Person Specification

The successful candidate will:

  • Optimise EA processes and tool usage, design templates, enforce data standards, manage artefact catalogues.
  • Model complex systems logically, communicate technical concepts clearly to diverse audiences.
  • Develop and maintain architectural standards aligned with enterprise IT strategy.
  • Provide consultancy and guidance to build internal capability and foster a self‑sustaining architecture community.
  • Understand commercial and sourcing strategies to support enterprise impact.

Essential Criteria – Key points of experience we need across three key areas

  • Strategic Tooling & Standards Management: Experience in strategic enterprise architecture tooling and governance, implementing repository‑backed modelling solutions and managing artefact catalogues.
  • Governance & Standardisation: Ability to structure and standardise deliverables for reuse, propose governance standards to maintain architectural integrity.
  • Framework & Notation Familiarity: Familiarity with frameworks such as TOGAF or Zachman, notation like ArchiMate and knowledge across all architectural domains.
  • Stakeholder Management: Proven stakeholder management experience, engaging and influencing at all organisational levels, translating complex concepts into clear insights tailored to diverse audiences.

Information Sites are not long‑term and may require relocation to new buildings following strategy updates.

Capability Allowance

Job part of Government Digital and Data Profession. Successful candidates will complete a Capability and Skills Assessment. Awarded allowance based on assessment of capabilities versus advertised skills. Allowance is non‑contractual, subject to annual review and can be withdrawn at any time.

Compensation & Benefits

Alongside a base salary of £58,541, HMRC contributes £16,959 towards the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme.

Pension – contributions equal to at least 28.97% of salary. Family friendly policies. Personal support. Coaching and development.

Flexible and hybrid working policies are available. Leave allowance starts at 25 days, increasing by one day for each year of qualifying service up to 30 days.
