This role supports the day-to-day running of a surveillance team, involving important assurance activity of surveillance assets, logistics of equipment, maintenance, vehicle fleet management and assisting technical officers with preparing for operational deployments. The role may include nights away, extended workdays and changes in working patterns. It can upskill you in this field and open a career path within HMRC. HMRC is the UK\\\’s tax, payments and customs authority. The Fraud Investigation Service (FIS) conducts civil and criminal investigations to protect funding for UK public services and deter fraud across taxes and duties.
The role focuses on supporting operational activities, ensuring surveillance equipment is operational, and contributing to designing and creating solutions used in live deployments. The team delivers services to wider Investigation and Intelligence directorates within HMRC, emphasising the use of technology in covert operations.
Responsibilities
- Working under the supervision of experienced Technical Surveillance Staff.
- Assemble and repair covert video/audio equipment and tracking equipment.
- Assist with the design and fabrication of bespoke solutions to technical surveillance challenges.
- Assist with research and development, contributing to and preparing business cases for new equipment and technology procurement.
- Maintain stock levels of equipment, components and materials; keep working areas professional.
- Support Technical Surveillance Officers to achieve operational objectives.
- Maintain the fleet of vehicles and provide logistics support for equipment movement.
- Provide technical equipment support for wider investigation and intelligence officers.
- Carry out regular assurance of sensitive surveillance equipment and assets.
- Carry out personal administration and respond to reasonable management requests.
Essential Criteria
- Excellent communicator, both orally and in writing, able to liaise with colleagues and technology surveillance stakeholders and explain information clearly.
- Strong organisational skills and experience using Microsoft Office tools for administrative and visual tasks.
- Operates with a proactive, flexible attitude; able to manage diaries and accommodate last-minute tasks; willingness to travel and be with customers when required.
- Hold a full valid UK driving licence and be willing to drive official vehicles.
Desirable Criteria
- Experience with using power tools and workshop items.
- Experience with IT networks.
- Experience with low voltage AC/DC electrical systems.
- Experience with working at height and relevant qualifications.
- Current electronics, engineering or IT qualification (e.g., City & Guilds, BTEC or equivalent) or in the process of obtaining one.
Flexibility, Benefits and Working Arrangements
- This post attracts Flexibility Payments at Level 1a combined with Level 1b, paid monthly with salary. Level 1a allows HMRC flexibility to change work patterns at short notice; occasional longer hours, weekends, and on-call periods may apply.
- Salary: £31,096 with HMRC contribution of £9,008 to the Civil Service Pension scheme; a defined benefits pension is provided.
- Hybrid and flexible working policies; generous leave allowance starting at 25 days, increasing to 30 days with service.
