Key Responsibilities
- Technical Leadership: Deliver high-level technical, tactical, and commercial advice to case teams, helping identify and challenge UK and international tax avoidance by LB customers across direct taxes.
- Specialist Expertise: Act as the Single Point of Contact for specific avoidance issues, including Unallowable Purpose challenges, General Anti-Abuse Rule (GAAR), Disclosure of Tax Avoidance Schemes (DOTAS), and Partial Closure Notices.
- Process Guidance: Provide expert support to LB case teams in applying HMRC’s Avoidance Handling Process (AHP). This includes guiding teams through appropriate referrals and submissions, from initial identification to Anti-Avoidance Board agreement on settlement strategies.
- Risk Management: Maintain a clear understanding of avoidance risks across regions and monitor their progression through the AHP to settlement or litigation. Support the mapping of Key, National, and Local risks within HMRC’s Risk Management Framework to Counter-Avoidance strategies.
- Strategic Oversight: Lead efforts to ensure comprehensive data on all LB avoidance challenges is available to HMRC. This enables accurate measurement of the avoidance tax gap and demonstrates to Parliament how LB is tackling avoidance among the UK’s largest businesses.
- Central Point of Contact: Serve as the primary contact for all avoidance-related issues. Act as a liaison between LB case teams and Counter-Avoidance, supporting both formal and informal technical submissions.
- Collaboration & Intelligence Sharing: Work closely with deep specialists—including International Tax Specialists (ITSs), Counter-Avoidance experts, and policy advisers—to support case teams. Share intelligence on emerging Corporate Finance avoidance themes and schemes across regions.
- Flexible Contribution: In addition to delivering high-quality casework, Tax Planning Specialists contribute flexibly to LB teams by leading responses to high-profile risks, designing and managing strategic projects, upskilling colleagues, and owning specific thematic areas.
Experience & Skills
- Recent experience of Direct tax technical work.
- Experience of working with businesses at a senior level in tax planning and compliance.
- Proven leadership in a technical environment and an interest in developing others.
- Strong understanding of accounting principles and their integration with tax.
- International Tax knowledge.
- Appreciation of commercial drivers.
- Experience of working in tax planning.
- Experience of developing, marketing or implementing tax planning structures.
Qualifications
- Advanced Diploma in International Taxation (COIT)
- At least one of the following membership qualifications: Institute of Chartered Accountants of England & Wales (ICAEW), Institute of Chartered Accountants in Scotland (ICAS), Institute of Chartered Accountants Ireland (ICAI), Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA)
- Post Graduate full legal qualification in taxation matters
- For previous or existing HMRC employees: TSP or predecessor qualification (TPDP, IDP, ITS2, CPT FT2) (note: existing HMRC employees would only be eligible if they have completed the appropriate course to G7 level (or above) as a tax professional).
