HMRC’s Making Tax Digital (MTD) Programme seeks someone who understands the language of accountants—and wants to influence the future, not just balance the books. This isn’t an accounting role—it’s bigger than that. You’ll be at the heart of one of the UK’s largest government digital transformations, working with the accountancy profession to help shape how millions of taxpayers interact with HMRC. We’re looking for someone with: A bookkeeping or accountancy background Real-world experience of Income Tax Self Assessment (ITSA) Stakeholder management and public speaking skills A passion for influencing change and improving the tax system Making Tax Digital Programme (MTD) is delivering a fundamental change to tax to help digitalise UK business. This is a rare opportunity to work at the centre of a major Government transformation programme. MTD is part of the Government Major Projects Portfolio (GMPP), at the heart of HMRC’s Tax Administration Strategy and one of HMRC’s highest priorities. It aims to modernize services, making it easier for individuals and businesses to manage their taxes digitally, reducing errors and administrative burdens. We offer a great work-life balance, with opportunities to work at our new Regional Centres or remotely. Contracts vary in length depending on the project, with potential extensions. Job Responsibilities: Manage relationships with influential stakeholders (agents, bookkeepers, professional bodies, businesses, landlords, trade associations, third sector) and incorporate their perspectives into MTD service design and delivery. Collaborate with stakeholders, mainly the accountancy profession, to maximize customer and agent readiness for mandatory compliance from April 2026, including testing phases from April 2025. Work with programme colleagues to proactively manage perceptions and expectations around testing. Ensure stakeholder insights influence MTD strategy and delivery, advocating for external advice and feedback. Leverage your experience as a bookkeeper or accountant, with professional qualifications in accountancy or membership of a recognized professional body. Bring strong experience in Income Tax Self Assessment, especially for unincorporated businesses and landlords, along with digital accounting expertise. Proven ability to manage relationships with large accountancy firms and stakeholders, building credibility. Be a confident presenter, capable of engaging large audiences through various mediums. Exhibit excellent communication, interpersonal, analytical, and problem-solving skills. Experience working within public sector organizations and knowledge of HMRC’s digital transformation initiatives is desirable.
