This is a unique opportunity for an Architect to work within HMRC at a time of significant change and transformation as it drives the focus of IT delivery away from point solutions and exploits the opportunities that cloud technologies can provide.

This outstanding opportunity is for an experienced Architect to work within the Architecture function of HMRC, part of the Chief Digital & Information Officer (CDIO) Group to be a part of the Architecture Office team. This is a senior leadership role that will provide opportunities to bring together, develop and lead teams of professionals to promote consistent architecture across a multi‑billion‑pound portfolio of business transformation projects, including cross‑government projects.

What You’ll Do:

  • Develop and maintain the overarching Borders & Trade IT architecture strategy.
  • Create and govern reference architectures to guide technology decisions.
  • Collaborate with senior business and technology stakeholders to align architecture with strategic objectives.
  • Support solution design and ensure technology investments deliver maximum value.
  • Drive innovation and continuous improvement across a diverse and complex IT environment.
  • Influence policy and set technical direction for HMRC’s Enterprise Operations estate.
  • Understand commercial processes and different sourcing strategies.

Person specification

As a member of the Borders and Trade Platform team this role is specifically responsible for the IT strategy and architecture of: Imports, Exports and Transit across UK borders and through the UK; UK Excise and Environmental taxes.

You will need to demonstrate within your application the following essential skills and experience:

  • A broad IT and Enterprise Architecture (EA) background, with experience in architecting enterprise scale applications or architecture roles where you will have gained experience of large‑scale data platform deployments.
  • The ability to develop, detail and establish architectural principles, policies, standards, roadmaps and reference architectures.
  • Ability to carry out horizon scanning across industry, identifying advances in technology, emerging trends and their potential impact on the organisation.
  • The ability to simplify complex and technical information by using appropriate and accessible language for non‑technical audiences.
  • Capable of guiding the decision‑making process, explaining trade‑offs and making a recommendation based on all the available information.
  • The ability to look beyond the immediate problem and identify the wider implications across the enterprise.

We’ll assess you against your demonstrable knowledge and experience in one of the following:

  • IT and Enterprise Architecture (EA) skills, including leadership of strategic directions/roadmaps for Enterprise scale platforms/capabilities.
  • Experience of driving, delivering, and assuring technology change against a background of organisational transformation.
  • Strategic engagements with stakeholders, with evidence of setting IT Strategy, influencing business customers and taking a lead role to enable both IT and business change.
  • Developing Technical Capability within an organisation, including empowering, supporting, and developing staff to achieve the highest performance standards.
  • Knowledge of enterprise‑wide IT applications, including making use of enterprise cloud platforms – IaaS, SaaS and PaaS.
  • Understand and contribute to discussions about commercial contracts, procurement and sourcing strategies.
  • Either have or want to work to achieve professional IT Qualifications such as TOGAF or CITP.
