As a Lead Infrastructure Engineer, you will lead the design, implementation and evolution of robust infrastructure capabilities across HMRC's digital estate. You will provide authoritative technical leadership in observability, cloud engineering, automation and resilience - ensuring HMRC's platforms remain secure, scalable and highly observable.
Working in partnership with product, platform and engineering teams, you will develop self-serve infrastructure patterns, strengthen enterprise observability practices and optimise system performance using modern tooling and automation. You will play a key role in defining how we build, monitor and operate infrastructure in a way that supports both operational reliability and long term transformation. You’ll also contribute to wider technical communities of practice, championing engineering standards and sharing expertise across the organisation.

We seek an experienced professional with hands-on experience in infrastructure engineering, demonstrating technical leadership capabilities in observability and self-serve platforms. You will contribute to our vast digital tax programmes, working with cloud engineering, SaaS platforms and observability technology and Borders & Trade innovations that directly impact millions of citizens.
Responsibilities
- Lead infrastructure delivery with a focus on observability, resilience, and modern engineering practices.
- Provide expert technical leadership, coaching and guidance to platform and product teams.
- Design and implement cloud based observability platforms using Infrastructure as Code and automation.
- Develop reusable, self-serve infrastructure patterns that accelerate delivery for engineering teams.
- Optimise enterprise system performance through advanced observability and monitoring capabilities, including AI assisted tooling.
- Collaborate with engineers, architects and product teams to drive consistent, high quality engineering standards.
- Contribute actively to technical communities, influencing best practice across the department.
You Will Be Able To Demonstrate
- Significant hands on experience delivering complex infrastructure solutions, including cloud, hybrid IT or SaaS platforms.
- Proven capability in designing, implementing and exploiting observability solutions and Infrastructure as Code.
- Strong technical leadership skills, including coaching and guiding teams in complex engineering environments.
- Proficiency in using cloud engineering platforms such as AWS and Azure, combined with experience of hybrid or multi cloud systems.
- Experience developing self-serve engineering capabilities or reusable infrastructure patterns.
- Ability to optimise system performance, resilience and security using modern observability and automation tooling.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to influence engineering teams and stakeholders.
- Commitment to continuous learning, technical excellence and community contribution.
- Professional experience with the Dynatrace SaaS platform or similar.
- Understanding of government or public sector technology requirements.
