HMRC’s Wealthy customer group (“Wealthy”) are responsible for the tax compliance of the UK’s wealthiest individuals. Wealthy individuals often have complex tax affairs that present significant challenges to an effective tax administration. Given the size and nature of the tax at risk within the wealthy population it increases the opportunities and risks of non-compliance.

Our teams assure the tax paid by wealthy individuals and tackle risks and non-compliant behaviours to ensure that wealthy individuals pay what they owe. This involves a strong, policy, technical and data led approach to promoting compliance and preventing non-compliance that encourages and supports the customer to get things right first time and contribute to the health of the tax system.

Within Wealthy, HMRC’s Accelerated Response team tackle some of the UK’s most complex and high profile tax compliance cases involving high-net-worth individuals. Operating nationally, this specialist team brings together senior tax professionals with broad cross-tax expertise to lead bespoke investigations that often span multiple tax regimes and business areas. Working collaboratively with legal and advisory partners, the Accelerated Response team identifies and addresses significant tax risks, often under intense scrutiny and the highest levels of governance.

The work is intellectually demanding, commercially sensitive and strategically important, requiring a blend of technical acumen, investigative instinct and a deep understanding of wealth structures and tax planning behaviours.

Job Specification

This is a senior technical role within HMRC’s Accelerated Response team supporting the High-Risk Wealth Programme (HRWP) and Wealthy Accelerated Resolution Programme (WARP) The successful candidate will lead complex, high-value tax investigations involving wealthy individuals and their associated entities. These cases often span multiple tax regimes and jurisdictions, requiring strategic oversight, investigative leadership and collaboration across HMRC and with external stakeholders. The complexity of each case is treated as a project, with the postholder responsible for driving it to resolution or litigation through leading a project team. The role does not include line management of staff but you will be highly influential, contributing to technical capability building and best practice sharing across the team.

Person specification

We are seeking a tax professional with significant experience and a strong cross-tax background. You’ll bring a broad understanding of tax interactions (e.g. income tax, corporation tax, IHT, CGT, SDLT etc) and the commercial awareness to identify risk in complex wealth structures. Experience in private sector tax planning, investigations or dispute resolution is essential, alongside the ability to lead high-profile cases under scrutiny.

Responsibilities

As a senior tax professional, you will play a crucial role and operate across the whole business area.

You will be responsible for:

  • Delivery of projects within the High Risk Wealth Programme and Wealthy Accelerated Resolution Programme.
  • Leading and coordinating some of the highest profile and complex cases revolving around Wealthy customers.
  • Researching, including by way of delegation, complex issues on these cases to progress the complex and cross-tax risks, and your team will work with specialists across HMRC to accelerate cases to resolution and decision points.
  • Using the lessons learned from these cases to upskill team members and apply across other cases with HRWP and WARP.
  • Keeping up to date with current tax law and continue to develop a deep understanding of the tax affairs of Wealthy customers, and use your professional knowledge to identify and tackle risks.
  • Using a range of tools and techniques to promote voluntary compliance and responding to non-compliance.
  • Building capability for your team, working closely with stakeholders across HMRC to enhance technical capability to ensure success.
  • Contributing to wider HMRC objectives and performance.
  • Extensive tax expertise, including cross-tax compliance, private sector advisory or experience resolving complex investigations or disputes with HMRC.
