The role of Production Instructor (non‑specialist) involves supervising and guiding prisoners in workshops that do not deliver formal qualifications. The position requires the ability to manage activities, maintain safety standards and support individual learning needs in a rotational work environment.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in the selection process of prisoners for the workshop.
  • Induct prisoners into the workshop, training them in health and safety, COSHH, machinery and tool usage, and ensuring equipment is safe, secure and properly accounted for.
  • Provide tailored support for prisoners, setting work schedules, managing targets, quality standards and maintaining delivery of contractual arrangements.
  • Supervise, manage and control prisoners safely and securely, overseeing performance, motivation, discipline, appraisal and development.
  • Conduct metal‑detector scans or rub‑down searches of prisoners entering or leaving workshops.
  • Initiate product development reviews to maintain output levels and provide variety of work and experience for prisoners.
  • Contribute to risk and health‑and‑safety assessments relating to consumables, workshop operations and specialist areas.
  • Maintain prisoner reports, including parole and sentence planning, ACCT and SIRs, and submit relevant incident reports (VRIR) and Incentive Earned Privilege (IEP) reports.
  • Maintain regular communications via radio net in accordance with the Local Security Strategy.
  • Request materials, estimate usage and meet work targets while ensuring quality assurance against product specifications.
  • Log attendance and approve prisoner hours worked and wages, including recording piece work where applicable.
  • Attend and contribute to relevant meetings as required.
  • Provide administrative support for workshop activities and prepare documentation for managers and verification/quality checking purposes.

Person Specification

  • No formal specialist qualification required; experience in production or supervisory roles is desirable.
  • Knowledge of health and safety, COSHH and prison work environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage teams, communicate effectively and maintain quality standards.
  • Strong commitment to safety, continuous improvement and collaborative working.
