As a prison officer you will be the frontline defender of public safety, building constructive relationships with prisoners and supporting your colleagues in a high security environment. You will work various shifts, including weekends, nights and public holidays.

Eligibility & Requirements
- Applicants must be at least 18 years old, meet Civil Service nationality requirements, and have the right to live and work in the UK.
- This role is not eligible for new Skilled Worker visas unless you held a visa before 22 July 2025.
- Pass a medical and fitness assessment, eye and hearing tests.
- Have no disqualifying criminal record.
- Provide reasonable adjustment support where required.
- Tattoos must not be offensive, discriminatory, violent or intimidating; facial tattoos are generally not acceptable.
- For Category A high‑security prisons, you must have lived in the UK for the last 3 years.
Assessment Process
- Online Test – stage 1 tests basic judgement and numerical skills.
- Online Test – stage 2 task‑based assessment of natural behaviours and qualities.
- Online Assessment Centre – evaluates abilities, behaviours and strengths.
- Medical and Fitness Test – eyesight, hearing and basic health screening.
- Merit list – successful candidates are offered a position when vacancies arise.
Salary and Benefits
- The initial training is 37 hours a week; after training you may work 37, 39 or 41 hours a week.
- 37 hours a week – £33,746 a year
- 39 hours a week – £35,875 a year
- 41 hours a week – £38,003 a year
Benefits include:
- 25 days annual holiday (rising to 30 days after 10 years of service)

Travel to Work
Some prisons are in rural locations with limited public transport. A driving licence and own transport are beneficial but not essential unless specified.
