Overview
Candidates must be a member of a church in communion with the Anglican Church or a church in the Free Church Group. The role is open to ordained clergy in Anglican or Free Church Group. Job holders will provide faith and pastoral care to prisoners and staff of their own faith tradition and have an understanding of other faiths as part of a multi‑faith chaplaincy team.
Responsibilities
- Provide guidance on their faith system, including advice, pastoral care and spiritual welfare to prisoners, staff and their families, liaising with Faith and Belief Adviser (FBA) as appropriate.
- Plan and lead worship/meditation, prayer, and faith‑specific meetings; ensure chaplaincy care is available at all times.
- Facilitate and deliver worship, meditation, study, and religious programmes; work collaboratively with other Chaplains, the Managing Chaplain, volunteers and external groups on maintenance and provision of worship facilities.
- Contribute to development of local policy, procedures, and practice.
- Provide pastoral care to prisoners, support and resolve crisis situations; provide mentoring and personal support for other chaplains and volunteers including following incidents.
- Nurture Chaplaincy volunteers in their contribution.
- Work with Official Prison Visitor (OPV) Liaison Officer to promote the scheme within the prison, ensuring all prisoners are aware and assist OPV volunteers.
- Ensure prison community is aware of relevant faith events and coordinate establishment support; acquire and distribute appropriate faith literature and artefacts.
- Contribute to training programmes and materials for staff and volunteers; organise and deliver Faith Awareness Training for staff.
- Represent the chaplaincy team at establishment meetings, committees, etc., in the absence of the Managing Chaplain.
- Actively support the Assessment, Care in Custody and Teamwork (ACCT) process.
- Attend relevant boards and meetings; contribute as chair or team member.
- Take on additional roles with agreement of the Managing Chaplain and senior management, such as Family Liaison Officer, Family Service contact, volunteer coordinator, etc.
- Forge links with local faith communities and other agencies; facilitate post‑release support for prisoners.
- Participate in developing ways to improve and achieve targets; undertake administration, data collection, analysis and collate relevant targets.
- Assist Probation Approved Premises (APs), supporting offenders on release into the community, those serving community sentences or other HMPPS funded community initiatives.
