Overview

Work in a rural prison – travel to the site; a driving licence is beneficial but not essential.

Responsibilities

  • Gate duties – secure the entry and exit of staff, visitors, vehicles.
  • Searches – staff, prisoners, visitors and vehicles.
  • Escort duties – escort vehicles, contractors, prisoners and staff around the site.
  • Key and radio collection – issue and collect staff keys and radios.
  • Patrol – walking the perimeter fence areas and patrolling the site.
  • Control room – operate the prison radio system and monitor CCTV.
  • Visits – welcome visitors on arrival and escort them if needed.
  • Mail – monitor and log incoming mail, collect mail from the local sorting office.
  • Food delivery – walk the site to deliver and collect food trollies or use an electric tug vehicle.
  • Night duties – ensure cell doors are locked and prisoners are accounted for.
  • Reception – photograph prisoners and process prisoner property and parcels.
  • Prisoner supervision – supervise prisoners, exchange clothing and property, escort prisoners around the site.
  • Phone – maintain the log of PIN phone requests and complete relevant records.
  • Procedure compliance – understand and conform to national and local policies, respond to incidents and emergencies.

Qualifications & Skills

You do not need any formal qualifications. Good judgement, common sense, responsibility and teamwork are essential. Confident communication in English (and Welsh where specified in Wales) is required.

Working Conditions

Physical tasks – lifting, carrying, standing and walking for long periods. Lone working on day and night shifts, working nights, evenings, weekends and bank/public holidays on a rolling shift pattern.

Salary & Benefits

£29,432 per annum for a 37‑hour week, inclusive of a 20% unsocial hours allowance. Benefits include 25 days annual leave on appointment (30 days after 10 years), 9 bank, public and privilege holidays, a generous Civil Service pension scheme, season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme and a Cycle to Work scheme.
