Your role
The Court Usher is a pivotal role in court proceedings and a vital link between court users and the Judiciary to ensure the smooth running of the hearings. You will be an essential first point of contact for all the court users, have regular contact with the judiciary and assisting the administrative staff. You will meet members of the public (which may include vulnerable witnesses and their legal representatives), prepare court/hearing rooms, and complete documentation, as well as ensuring the court runs efficiently. You will also carry out some general clerical work as required to support the work of HMCTS. Ushers work within a team with regular management support and are responsible for their own time.
Responsibilities
- Welcome and assist court users, including vulnerable individuals, and liaise with the judiciary and administrative staff.
- Prepare court/hearing rooms and complete required documentation to support hearings.
- Carry out general clerical tasks as required to support HMCTS operations.
- Manage own time within a team environment with supervision available.
Skills and Experience
- Friendly and approachable manner with strong communication skills; able to assist and address court users clearly and confidently.
- Ability to multi-task, prioritise, and organise own time; comfortable with IT and attention to detail to ensure accurate court documents.
- Willingness to adapt to new software packages and provide help and reassurance calmly and professionally in challenging situations.
Qualifications and Additional Details
- Standard full-time working hours are 37 hours per week. Part-time, flexible and job-sharing patterns are welcome where they meet role and business needs and are agreed prior to appointment.
- Minimum hours for part-time roles: 22.2 hours over three working days.
- Skilled Worker Visa: From 22 July 2025, the salary threshold and sponsorship rules have changed. This role does not meet eligibility for Skilled Worker visa sponsorship unless you have held a Skilled Worker visa continuously since before 22 July 2025. If you are eligible, raise it during vetting checks.
- Hybrid working arrangements may be available; employees are expected to spend a minimum of 60% of working time in an office, subject to local estate capacity.
