Overview

Our Crown Court Clerks are essential to ensure Crown Court hearings run smoothly. They have the self-assurance to speak in court, communicate confidently with the Judge and all participants, and the skill to produce accurate and timely Court documents. Our Crown Court Clerk training programme provides a structured yet flexible approach to building the skills required to perform this vital role.

Role Details

These operational roles are customer facing, requiring successful applicants to be office based to provide HMCTS services to the public. Standard full time working hours are 37 hours per week. HMCTS welcomes part-time, flexible and job-sharing working patterns, where they meet the demands of the role and business needs and are agreed prior to appointment. All applications for part-time, flexible and job-sharing working patterns will be considered in accordance with the MoJ\\\’s Flexible Working policy. Applications for part-time working would be considered; however, due to the nature of the role the minimum hours would be 22.5 hours per week over 3 days.

Posts available: 1 full-time position (37 hours) and 1 part-time post (22.5 hours over 3 days).

Location and Travel

The successful person will be based at Worcester Crown Court; there may be a requirement to travel to other Court locations (Hereford and Redditch) within the Midlands Region to support when required for business needs. Training may take place at an alternative location to your base location. Advance notice and planning will be given. Additional travel costs such as mileage and train travel apply when travelling to alternative Courts. Travel will be on a rota basis once fully trained.

Security and Nationality

Successful candidates must undergo a criminal record check. People working with government assets must complete baseline personnel security standard checks.

What the Role Requires

We are looking for individuals who are committed to public service and delivering justice. You must be an active listener and confident communicator; able to speak publicly in court and liaise with the Judge, defence, prosecution, media, and members of the public in a calm, professional manner. You will work as part of a clerking team to ensure the smooth running of Crown Court sittings, intervene when required, and maximise judicial sitting time. You should have experience in producing exact and time-critical documentation, including taking verdicts, conducting arraignments, producing Court orders, and recording hearing outcomes accurately and efficiently. You should be resilient, keen to learn, and able to multi-task, with IT skills to adapt to new systems and technologies as we invest in digital solutions to improve justice delivery.
