Our Crown Court Clerks ensure Crown Court hearings run smoothly. They speak confidently in court, communicate with Judges and all participants, and produce accurate and timely court documents. The role includes line management responsibility.

Office based, providing HMCTS services to the public, with standard full‑time working hours of 37 hours per week (Monday to Friday). Occasional travel to other courts will be required; regular travel between Brighton Law Courts, Hove Trial Centre and Lewes Combined Court is part of the role.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure Crown Court hearings run smoothly.
  • Speak confidently in court and liaise with Judges, defence, prosecution, media, members of the public and other stakeholders.
  • Produce accurate and timely court documents, including recorded hearing outcomes, court orders and other required documentation.
  • Manage a team of clerks, setting clear direction and measuring performance through team and individual meetings.
  • Support the delivery of HMCTS services to the public and enhance customer experience.
  • Maintain high emotional resilience and be sensitive to difficult issues, taking a non‑judgemental approach to service users.
  • Adapt to new systems and technologies, working with emerging digital solutions.

Person Specification / Qualifications

  • Ability to motivate and support a team to deliver excellent customer service.
  • Excellent communication, organisational and prioritisation skills.
  • Ability to complete documents accurately and to deadlines.
  • IT proficiency and ability to learn and adapt to different technologies and software packages.
  • Experience producing exact and time‑critical documentation.
  • Demonstrated behaviours: Managing a Quality Service, Leadership, Communicating and Influencing, Delivering at Pace.

  • UK nationals
  • Nationals of the Republic of Ireland
  • Nationals of Commonwealth countries with the right to work in the UK
  • Nationals of the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein and family members of those nationalities with settled or pre‑settled status under the EUSS
  • Individuals with limited leave to remain or indefinite leave to remain who were eligible to apply for EUSS on or before 31 December 2020
  • Turkish nationals, and certain family members of Turkish nationals, who have accrued the right to work in the Civil Service
