Waltham Place is a nationally recognised organic estate in Berkshire, celebrated for its naturalistic gardens, ecological approach to horticulture, and long-standing commitment to biodiversity.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and knowledgeable Seasonal Ornamental Gardener to join our horticultural team from July through to the end of October 2026. This is an exciting opportunity to work within a unique garden and estate setting, supporting the care and development of diverse ornamental plantings and naturalistic landscapes during one of the busiest and most rewarding times of the gardening year.

The Role

Working alongside the Senior Gardener and wider estate team, you will help maintain the gardens to an exceptional standard throughout the summer and into autumn. This hands-on role is ideal for someone with a passion for ornamental horticulture, ecological gardening and high-quality garden maintenance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain ornamental borders and mixed perennial plantings.
  • Carry out weeding and general seasonal garden maintenance.
  • Assist with lawn and pathway maintenance within the gardens.
  • Support the management of naturalistic and ecological planting schemes.
  • Assist with seasonal garden projects and ongoing developments.
  • Help ensure the gardens are presented to the highest horticultural standards.

Essential Requirements

  • Previous experience working in a professional garden, estate garden or horticultural environment.
  • A genuine enthusiasm for plants and ornamental horticulture.
  • Good plant identification skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a small team.
  • Physically fit and comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Reliable, organised and attentive to detail.

Desirable Skills & Experience

  • RHS, NVQ or equivalent horticultural qualification.
  • Knowledge of organic horticulture or agriculture.
  • Experience of naturalistic planting styles and ecological gardening.
  • Good knowledge of herbaceous perennials, shrubs and ornamental grasses.
  • Experience working within a private estate or public garden.
  • Full UK driving licence.
