The Opportunity
HKA is offering an exciting opportunity for a quantity surveyor ready to step into the world of dispute resolution consultancy. Whether you’re currently working for a major UK contractor on live, complex projects, or you’ve already begun developing experience in a disputes‑focused role, this position gives you the chance to elevate your expertise and contribute to industry‑leading cases from our Glasgow office.
Role & Responsibilities
- Conducting detailed analysis of construction accounts, costs, values, and payments to identify discrepancies, risks, and opportunities.
- Training to undertake technical quantum analyses using industry‑accepted methodologies, contributing sections to expert reports used in arbitration and adjudication.
- Drafting components of quantum expert reports under guidance from senior team members.
- Reviewing documentation across a broad range of sectors — including infrastructure, oil & gas, and residential — to support expert outputs.
- Supporting the project team and Expert on major assignments.
- Preparing notes, briefing materials, and external communications aligned with the project scope and workstreams.
- Participating in client meetings and engaging directly with stakeholders.
- Regularly attending marketing, networking, and industry events — including seminars, lectures, and client gatherings — to develop your professional network within the Glasgow market and wider industry.
We welcome applications from candidates with the following background:
- 3+ years’ experience in Quantity Surveying or cost‑control roles within a reputable contractor.
- Experience overseeing and managing the commercial administration of construction contracts, ideally with exposure to assessing claims for legitimacy and quantum, and some involvement in dispute resolution activities.
- A strong understanding of key forms of contract and the ability to interpret and administer them effectively.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with experience preparing reports, letters, or briefing documents on construction claims or cost matters.
- Strong technical competency and confidence using relevant software tools.
- The ability to communicate highly technical material to a non‑technical audience.
- Strong interpersonal skills, a collaborative mindset, and a proactive approach to problem‑solving.
Advantageous (but not essential): experience undertaking claims assessments, participating in dispute discussions, identifying and mitigating risks, and beginning to perform contract reviews.
