H&J Martin Ltd (part of the Lagan Specialist Contracting Group) is now recruiting a Head of Sustainability.

Location: Rosemount House, Belfast

Role Overview

You will be required to lead the design and implementation of a sustainability framework to align with the business objectives and needs. You will develop sustainable ways of working both new and established, in all areas of Environmental, Social and Governance, to minimise environmental impact and promote social responsibility. You will also be encouraged to be innovative within the role and live through the Company’s core culture and values in what will be a varied and interesting role.

What you'll do

  • Leading on developing and implementing environmental objectives and plans e.g., Driving of climate action targets, collecting and analysing carbon information, waste management initiatives.
  • Working closely with Health and Safety teams and sites to collect information, educate and develop sustainable practices.
  • Developing and executing relevant social value initiatives.
  • Working with IT Teams to set up new online platform for information collection.
  • Training staff and supply chain.
  • Audit and reporting of key performance initiatives.
  • PR and social/in person communications.
  • Representing the company as required in external forums.
  • Management Quality Systems directly relating to ISO9001 and ISO14001.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Sustainability Planning and Implementation development and implementation of our sustainability strategy, (for both the Company, its joint venture businesses, and associated companies).
  • Collaborate with relevant departments to integrate sustainability practices into business processes and operations.
  • Reporting and Documentation collect data, monitor, measure, and report on sustainability performance metrics and support regular audits and reviews of the operations, processes, and procedures to identify and address issues.
  • Provide guidance and support on and develop and implement corrective action plans as needed.
  • Stakeholder Engagement engage with internal and external stakeholders, including employees, supply chain, joint venture partners and community partners to promote sustainability principles and initiatives.
  • Build relationships to support sustainability goals.
  • Provide press releases and update social media platforms to promote the company.
  • Regulatory Compliance - stay up to date with changes in relevant laws, regulations and emerging trends related to sustainability, monitor regulatory developments, advise key stakeholders, and communicate potential impacts.
  • Continuous Improvement - identify areas for improvement in sustainability programs and processes and implement measures to enhance their effectiveness.
  • Develop training programs to educate employees on sustainable practices and the importance of corporate responsibility and foster a culture of sustainability within the organization by promoting awareness and participation.
  • Manage the company’s annual re-certification via BM Trada.

What you'll bring

Essential Criteria:

  • Demonstrable experience working in an organisational environment in a regulatory, business improvement, sustainability or compliance role.
  • IT skills such as using document management systems, MS Excel, MS Word.
  • Experience of working with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Ability to collect and collate information and present it in a clear and relevant manner.
  • Highly analytical with strong attention to detail.
  • Degree or other equivalent qualification in one or more of the following areas: Sustainability, Environmental Management, Business Administration/Governance, Law, Construction related qualification.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Experience working in regulatory matters; and/or.
  • Experience in a commercial environment e.g., some form of business environment; and/or.
  • Experience in the construction industry.
  • Knowledge of ISO Standards and requirements.
  • Membership of IEMA.
