Our Opportunity

We currently have an opening in our Engineering team for a Design Engineer. This role will be primarily working in our ongoing projects to maintain and renew London Underground’s operational network, focusing on telecoms and network solutions.

As a Design Engineer, you will design solutions that meet the needs of our clients and users within the rail domain. You will work closely with cross-functional teams to understand requirements, design and implement solutions, and ensure the scalability, reliability, and performance of our products, solutions and services.

You will be responsible for the design production, design estimates, design programs and design work packages for bids, projects and services to contract requirements, standards, budget, and on-time delivery. You will undertake the role of Designer as identified in the CDM regulations, with particular attention to design risks, ensuring that safety risks are designed out or deemed as low as reasonably practicable.

This is a hybrid role working a minimum of two days per week from our Waterloo office site.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with all stakeholders to understand project requirements and translate them into designs.
  • Design solutions using industry best practice, processes and tools.
  • Produce designs that are buildable and maintainable that meet customer requirements and relevant standards and legislation.
  • Identify and address technical debt, performance bottlenecks, and other issues.
  • Work collaboratively with other engineering disciplines and other stakeholders to ensure successful delivery of the project.
  • Understand and follow the project delivery processes, methodologies, and use the defined tools as set out in the Hitachi Rail Management System and the project specific Engineering Management Plans.
  • Escalate issues to the Senior Design Engineer where necessary.
  • Provide status reports to the Senior Design Engineer.

Technical Skills and Experience

  • Proven capabilities in some or all of the following areas: IP/MPLS Layers: Layer-2 VPN Circuit emulation [C-pipe. CESoPSN, SATOP], Layer-2 VPN-Ethernet [E-Piper, VPLS, H-VPLS], Layer-3 VPN [VPRN, IES].
  • Alternative MPLS options: Flat IS-IS, LDP, Segment Routing (w/wo PCE), MPLS-TP, SD-WAN, SASE.
  • DWDM Optical Fundamentals: Wavelength multiplexing, fibre impairments, power budgeting.
  • System Design: Node architecture, amplifiers, OADM. ROADMs, IP over DWDM.
  • Multi-Service Networks Service Types: Voice, video, IoT, VPN services.
  • Nokia Service Platform (NSP): Network Functions Virtualization (NFV), Software Defined Networking (SDN).
  • Radio LTE Fundamentals: EPC, RAN basics, spectrum planning.
  • Strong ability to use design tools to produce complex designs.
  • Capable of managing a design through a defined design process.
  • Working knowledge of project plans.
  • Ability to produce metrics as part of Quality assurance & control.
  • Proven record of working in a telecoms engineering environment.
  • Fully understands the engineering lifecycle and its associated processes.
  • Knowledgeable about CDM regulations.
  • Can manage configuration control.
  • Appreciation of requirements to work effectively in an engineering environment and understanding of engineering delivery methodologies.

  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team.

We aim to complete a one-stage interview process, which will be held at the Waterloo office. The interview will focus on both technical and behavioural competencies.
