Your New Role
Here at Hitachi Rail we have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Field Engineer to join our team. Both electrical or mechanical bias bring benefits to this role so we are open to both backgrounds. As the Field Engineer, the role will encompass the installation, commissioning, maintenance, and support of digital & analogue electronic monitoring systems incorporated into rail service and passenger vehicles.
The Field Engineer will provide and offer technical solutions to our customers by responding to inquiries and assisting in troubleshooting and resolving issues. The individual will need to be able to evaluate and prioritise cases on an ongoing basis whilst ensuring the customer has regular, clear communications, whether that be via email, phone or face-to-face.
This role will involve some travel throughout the UK, generally Mondays to Fridays. Weekend and night working will also be required though not frequent.
Other responsibilities include:
- Attend rail depots throughout the UK or occasionally worldwide to repair faulty train borne systems and commission new or existing systems or products.
- Track and manage work record using Atlassian -Jira or similar fault tracking tools.
- Escalation of key risks or concerns regarding our in-field performance.
- Work with all internal groups, including support, sales, engineering, product management and health and safety.
- Prepare accurate and timely reports both for internal use and external customers.
- Actively part of a ‘On Call’ rota in supporting customer enquiries and systems queries.
- Update and coordinate serviceable documentation improvement initiatives through existing revisions and evolution of the general role tasks and daily activities.
About you
- Strong experience as a Field Engineer, Systems Support Engineer, or similar role.
- Formal qualification in electronics, electrical engineering, mechatronics, or equivalent subject.
- Good understanding of electronics systems and electrical installations on rail vehicles or similar.
- Extensive experience of the installation, commissioning and configuration of large systems comprising electronic, electrical, mechanical and PC elements.
- Strong understanding of Windows and Unix/Linux environment and platforms and adept at using a PC Interface (laptop) to configure software applications.
- Ability to build and configure workstation & server/computer systems and applications.
- Ability to read schematics and circuit diagrams, produce and follow technical instructional documentation.
- Experience in the use of test equipment, including multi-meters and oscilloscopes.
- Knowledge of TCP/IP networking and serial communications protocols (RS232/RS422/RS485).
- Knowledge/understanding of the following technologies desirable: GPS/IMUs/Accelerometers/Lasers and Cameras.
- Strong awareness of on-site safety, previous experience of a rail depot environment or similar safety critical workplace. Previous PTS experience preferred but not essential.
- Ability to work under pressure & the capability to prioritise tasks based on urgency and importance and the commitment to achieve a timely resolution.
- Critical thinker and problem-solving skills with the motivation and ability to learn new skills and technologies.

- Good time-management skills.
