Your New Role
The Electrical Systems Engineer will be responsible to the Electrical Engineering Manager for the investigation of maintenance and safety related defects and subsequent engineering solutions to ensure contractual reliability targets are achieved and maintenance practices implemented/improved. You will also be responsible for activities relating to design modifications and subsequent applications for customer/regulatory approval for changes.
What you’ll be doing
- Responsible for investigation of maintenance, reliability and safety related defects raised by our internal customers ensuring compliance with stakeholder and UK legislative requirements.
- Assist in the development of documented engineering procedures, practices and policies.
- Assist in the co-ordination of continuous improvement programmes to ensure contractual requirements are achieved.
- Liaison with Hitachi and external personnel as required to complete the duties of the post.
- Provide detailed engineering analysis of assigned complex issues, and work towards containment of the issue, root cause analysis, and subsequent development of long-term corrective actions.
- Write clear, detailed technical reports on any investigations carried out, including details of subsequent actions and any recommendations.
- Progress corrective actions through the Change Approval Process, ready for implementation on the appropriate fleets, to include appropriate documentation and evidence.
- Assist as needed in the creation or amendment of documents for maintenance and overhaul activities of electrical systems and/or components.
- Develop and maintain good working relationships with internal stakeholders and suppliers as appropriate to the issues under investigation.
- Follow and, where appropriate, assist in the development of relevant procedures to ensure smooth progression of work.
- Develop a good working relationship with design engineering and manufacturing engineering teams.
- Support learning and development within the Service and Maintenance team, including the development of new and Graduate Engineers.
- Ensure adequate levels of Health, Safety and Environmental concerns are maintained in all aspects of their work and in accordance with company policies.
About you
Essential Requirements
- Engineering degree (i.e. BSc, BEng or MEng/MSc) in relevant engineering discipline or the ability to demonstrate degree level working.
- Excellent knowledge of a selection of electrical systems, both technically and operationally.
- Excellent knowledge of electrical engineering principles, relevant standards, codes of practices and design principles/practices; particularly in UK Rolling Stock.
- Proven experience at delivering complex electrical solutions in a Rolling Stock environment.
- Comfortable with ‘hands on’ engineering for on-train investigations when needed.
- Sound understanding of health and safety requirements in a practical working environment.

- Professional Registration with relevant Engineering Institution (e.g. IEng, CEng with IMechE, IET etc.).
- Knowledge of the UK Railway Operations and Engineering Safety Management System.
