Overview
Wheel lathe – Team Leader role at Hitachi Rail. Permanent position based at Bounds Green (London). Salary £55,176 with +15% shift allowance; +£6,000 location allowance if required.
Description
In this role, an experienced Wheel lathe – Team Leader will join the Bounds Green depot in London. You will be responsible on a shift basis for the wheel lathe operatives, ensuring the safe operation of the underfloor wheel lathe, and undertaking corrective and preventative wheel maintenance for Hitachi rolling stock.
Responsibilities
- Deploy and maintain depot operational processes and procedures relating to the maintenance and repair of Hitachi rolling stock assets.
- Write and deploy necessary operational processes and procedures for the wheel lathe and associated equipment.
- Support the continued development of the SAP maintenance management system (MMS); ensure shop floor requirements are captured and delivered.
- Foster continuous improvement to improve maintenance processes and wheel lathe operations.
- Plan workloads, determine staffing levels and strengths to enable on-time work completion.
- Conduct annual performance appraisals and development plans for all wheel lathe team members; manage probationary reviews at 3 and 6 months for new hires.
- Ensure health and safety practices, PPE usage, clean road ways/pits, and conduct incident investigations (PICOT process).
- Authorize/decline annual leave, monitor sickness, conduct return-to-work interviews as required.
- Coordinate with Hitachi and external personnel to complete duties; support shift Team Leader and Maintenance Engineers as needed.
- Support Service Delivery Manager to ensure corrective and preventative wheel lathe work achieves contractual reliability and availability.
- Plan proactive and corrective wheel lathe maintenance; develop preventative maintenance regimes for wheel sets; monitor SAP for work recording; establish a wheel set database to capture history.
- Ensure post-turning requirements are met to return vehicles to correct ride height; oversee maintenance of specialist equipment and daily/weekly/monthly checks; report defects for rectification.
- Record and order materials as required; ensure safe disposal of waste per procedures.
- Maintain health & safety and housekeeping standards; manage leave, workload, and training considerations.
Required Skills/Knowledge
- Network Rail Sentinel PTS, Manual Handling, COSHH.
- Experience leading a wheel lathe team on a shift basis in a modern rolling stock depot.
- Strong safety awareness in railway engineering environments.
- Extensive experience in preventative and corrective wheel lathe work on modern rolling stock.
- Stores, spare parts logistics and material management experience at a railway maintenance depot.
- Experience with Maintenance Management Systems (MMS) and reliability/availability analytics.
- Strong people management skills; able to lead a team of wheel lathe engineers on shift.
- Experience with 3rd party lathe work and related procedures.
Qualifications
- M&E HNC or served engineering apprenticeship or proven equivalent railway experience; NVQ Level 3 in Engineering.
Behavioural
- Knowledge of rules and regulations; professional representation of Hitachi.
- Proven leadership capabilities, calm under pressure, excellent communication, and ability to interface with all levels.
Desirable
- Intermediate IT skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
- Reading electrical, pneumatic, mechanical schematics and drawings.
- Train driving, Fire Warden, First Aider; experience with depot protection and working at height; COSHH/Manual Handling.
