Here at Hitachi Rail we have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Field Engineer to join our team. Both electrical and mechanical backgrounds are welcomed. As a Field Engineer the role will encompass the installation, commissioning, maintenance, and support of digital and analogue electronic monitoring systems incorporated into rail services and passenger vehicles. The Field Engineer will provide and offer technical solutions to our customers by responding to inquiries and assisting in troubleshooting and resolving issues. The individual must evaluate and prioritise cases on an ongoing basis whilst ensuring the customer has regular, clear communications via email, phone, or face‑to‑face. This role involves some travel throughout the UK, generally Mondays to Fridays. Weekend and night work may be required, though infrequently.

Responsibilities

  • Attend rail depots across the UK and occasionally worldwide to repair faulty train‑borne systems and commission new or existing systems or products.
  • Track and manage work records using Atlassian Jira or similar fault‑tracking tools.
  • Escalate key risks or concerns regarding in‑field performance.
  • Collaborate with internal groups, including support, sales, engineering, product management, and health and safety.
  • Prepare accurate and timely reports for internal use and external customers.
  • Participate in an ‘On Call’ rota to support customer enquiries and system queries.
  • Update and coordinate serviceable documentation improvement initiatives through existing revisions and evolution of general role tasks and daily activities.

About You

  • Strong experience as a Field Engineer, Systems Support Engineer, or similar role.
  • Formal qualification in electronics, electrical engineering, mechatronics, or an equivalent subject.
  • Good understanding of electronics systems and electrical installations on rail vehicles or similar.
  • Extensive experience installing, commissioning, and configuring large systems comprising electronic, electrical, mechanical, and PC elements.
  • Strong understanding of Windows and Unix/Linux environments and adept at using a PC interface to configure software applications.
  • Ability to build and configure workstation and server/computer systems and applications.
  • Ability to read schematics and circuit diagrams, and produce and follow technical instructional documentation.
  • Experience using test equipment, including multimeters and oscilloscopes.
  • Knowledge of TCP/IP networking and serial communication protocols (RS232/RS422/RS485).
  • Desirable knowledge of GPS/IMU/ accelerometer, laser, and camera technologies.
  • Strong awareness of on‑site safety; previous experience in a rail depot environment or similar safety‑critical workplace.
  • Previous PTS experience preferred but not essential.
  • Ability to work under pressure and prioritise tasks based on urgency and importance with commitment to timely resolution.
  • Critical thinker and problem‑solving skills with motivation and ability to learn new skills and technologies.
