Overview
Technical Riding Technician – Hitachi Rail, Edinburgh
Permanent contract. Days & nights shift across a 24/7 rota.
Your new role
In this role you will provide mobile technical support to deliver operational requirements, as defined in the ScotRail Train Services Agreement (TSA). Technicial Riding Technicians shall be flexible and adaptable, deployed across the ScotRail network (including Outstations), delivering exemplary support to our Customers in line with HRL vision & objectives.
This role involves working days and nights shifts and traveling as required to meet trains in traffic and support responses to in-service incidents.
Main Responsibilities
- Undertaking rapid fault finding and diagnosis of faults/defects affecting service, capability or safety. Correct and/or isolate faulty components to enable a Set to return to service where practicable
- Liaise with HRL Maintenance Controller, Central Planning Cell (CPC), and update ScotRail operational staff to minimise delays/impact
- Travel on the ScotRail network as directed to meet trains in traffic and support responses to in-service incidents
- Nightshift travel between ScotRail Outstations to accommodate overnight work as directed by CPC or Maintenance Control
- Use a 4G tablet, diagnostic laptop and appropriate tooling to undertake and record all work; report findings when not rectified at the time
- Liaise with multiple stakeholders as required
- Use engineering processes, tools and techniques to ensure HRL assets comply with operational specifications
- Keep Maintenance Management systems up to date with clear information of work carried out
- Read and extract information from traction and rolling stock drawings, Vehicle Maintenance Instructions and specifications
- Prepare for and undertake removal and/or repair/replacement of components
- Install new traction and rolling stock components using engineering processes, tools and techniques
- Identify, assess and rectify defects on HRL rolling stock assets
- Identify repeat defects and recommend/carry out corrective action
- Create/amend technical scopes of work for fault rectification by other staff
- Adhere to and champion SSHEQ practices; carry out risk assessments and ensure Safe Systems of Work
- Willingness to develop professionally and support good working relationships
- Communicate with personnel at all levels to complete duties
- Report to and assist TRT Team Leader and Outstations Manager as required

Licences / Competences
- Network Rail Sentinel PTS (or willing and able to attain on appointment)
- Maintenance and fault diagnosis, preferably with EMUs (transferrable skills considered)
- Driving Licence
Qualifications
- M & E HNC or served apprenticeship with mechanical, electrical disciplines
- Engineering based N/SVQ level 3
Behavioural
- Ability to work as an individual or in a team and make decisions under pressure
- Prioritise workload and be flexible to emergent requirements
- Sound knowledge of and compliance with rules and regulations
- Good written and verbal communication skills
- Able to represent Hitachi Rail professionally
Desirable
- Intermediate IT skills – Word, Excel
