Hitachi Rail is currently looking to appoint a Senior RAMS Engineer. This role is responsible for providing specialist input and support to the Reliability, Availability, Maintainability and Technical Safety (RAMS) function in undertaking and delivering the required safety and assurance activities for projects, products and bids, in accordance with project/product requirements, customer requirements and RAMS processes. The role will provide specialist RAMS support to projects and the RAMS function, ensuring that the relevant processes apply consistently and to the required quality. This is a hybrid role, where our minimum expectation is that you will be on site at least 2 days per week.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing specialist support in Technical Safety, RAM and Assurance to the engineering and technical safety roles of the project in defining, developing and delivering solutions to achieve the specifications.
  • Delivering RAMS engineering deliverables throughout the project lifecycle, from specification, safety case development through to safety approval and acceptance.
  • Leading and supporting system safety and RAM analyses, quantitative and qualitative as required; hazard management from hazard identification through hazard closeout, safety requirements specification and SIL determination.
  • Interfacing with the client, to capture and define system and safety requirements, and later in the lifecycle, the content of verification and validation activities and the required format for any safety demonstrations.
  • Coordinating and supporting the RAMS input to bids, including the safety management organisation, roles and responsibilities, and safety engineering and safety assurance/approvals activities and tasks to be conducted.
  • Developing remits and managing contracts with independent bodies.
  • Leading specific RAMS scope of work during project/product design reviews to validate the correct implementation of the technical safety and assurance requirements and processes, and ensuring the planned technical safety and assurance activities and deliverables are in alignment with the design.
  • Preparing and supervising the on-site testing and commissioning of assets, equipment and systems in a railway environment.
  • Initiating and participating in safety reviews and safety audits as appropriate.
  • Providing support to the safety authority for incident reporting and response, including mitigation, root-cause analysis, corrective action definition, tracking and closeout and lessons learned.
  • Providing support to the RAMS function for strategic, communication and training initiatives.

  • Specialist knowledge and experience of railway RAMS standards, such as EN50126, EN50716, EN50129 and European Railway Regulation for Safety and Interoperability.
  • Able to undertake independent investigations and gather required evidence/facts.
