Your new role

We have an exciting opportunity for a talented Mechanical Engineer to join our Engineering team as a

Senior Mechanical Design Engineer (Rail) based in

Newton Aycliffe .

In this role, you will take ownership of the technical design and integration of train driver cabs, helping to deliver innovative rolling stock solutions that are used by rail operators across the world.

Working within a collaborative, international engineering environment, you\'ll combine mechanical design expertise with systems integration, ergonomics and technical problem-solving to create safe, efficient and user-focused cab solutions.

  • Some key responsibilities
  • Lead and support the technical design and development of driver cab systems throughout bid and project phases.
  • Define and develop equipment integration concepts within the driver\'s cab environment.
  • Carry out ergonomic assessments to optimise the driver\'s workspace.
  • Develop system requirements specifications and technical documentation.
  • Review and assess supplier proposals, designs and engineering solutions.
  • Verify mechanical, electrical and installation drawings and associated documentation.
  • Review FEM analysis reports and support design validation activities.
  • Conduct tolerance analysis and equipment integration assessments.
  • Support system testing, validation activities and type testing.
  • Participate in design reviews with customers, suppliers and internal stakeholders.
  • Work closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams to deliver high-quality solutions on time and to specification.

About You

We\'re looking for a proactive and collaborative engineer with a strong mechanical engineering background and a passion for delivering innovative technical solutions.

You'll ideally have

  • A degree in Mechanical Engineering or an equivalent engineering discipline.
  • Experience within rail, automotive, aerospace, heavy engineering or another complex mechanical engineering environment.
  • Experience in mechanical integration, vehicle engineering or product design.
  • Knowledge of mechanical systems, including bolted, riveted and bonded assemblies.
  • Understanding of hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical schematics.
  • Experience working with resin or composite materials such as FRP.
  • Proficiency in CAD software such as Creo, CATIA, Auto CAD or similar.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to analyse technical requirements.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • The ability to work effectively both independently and within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Willingness to undertake occasional national and international travel.

It would be advantageous if you have

  • Experience designing driver cabs, vehicle interiors or operator environments.
  • Knowledge of railway engineering processes and operations.
  • Experience using requirements management tools such as IBM DOORS.
  • Surface modelling experience within CAD environments.
