Your New Role
Here at Hitachi Rail we have a unique and exciting opportunity for an experienced Senior Digital Rail Solutions Engineer to join our Digital Asset Monitoring team. This role is part of a multi-disciplinary team that supports both operators and maintainers of rolling stock, while developing new digital tools for condition-based maintenance, analytics, and operational efficiency.
The successful candidate will act as a bridge between rolling stock operators and software developers: capturing operator requirements, prototyping digital solutions, and ensuring delivery of robust, scalable applications. This role is hands-on, combining railway domain expertise with software development, systems integration, and data-driven innovation.
What you’ll be doing:
- Engage with rolling stock operators and maintainers to capture, refine, and prioritise requirements for new digital tools.
- Prototype and develop software solutions to demonstrate and validate new concepts.
- Translate customer requirements into technical specifications and work closely with developers to deliver solutions.
- Apply railway knowledge to ensure delivered tools meet operational and maintenance needs (e.g. KPIs, fleet reliability, condition-based maintenance).
- Support integration of solutions with on-train and off-train systems, including wayside monitoring platforms and cloud/on-premise infrastructure.
- Contribute to fault root cause analysis and development of diagnostic/analytics features.
- Support test, deployment, and commissioning activities for new features and tools.
- Work with a wide range of technologies: VPNs, MQTT, TCP/IP, Kafka, SFTP, APIs, Kubernetes, Web Applications, SQL, and containerised applications.
- Collaborate across international teams of engineers, developers, and support staff.
About you:
Essential:
- Proven experience in the UK railway industry (operations, rolling stock, or maintenance).
- Strong software development skills, with ability to code and prototype.
- Familiarity with cloud-based solutions, big data platforms, and AI-driven analytics.
- Understanding of on-board electronics and data acquisition systems.
- Knowledge of networking, application hosting, and data integration platforms (cloud and on-prem).
- Ability to work independently and directly with customers, maintaining clear communication between technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Strong problem-solving, diagnostic, and analytical skills.
Desirable:
- Experience in testing and commissioning train-to-wayside or digital fleet systems.
- Knowledge of rolling stock subsystems (TCMS, traction, brakes, HVAC, doors, etc.).
- Familiarity with condition-based monitoring and predictive maintenance techniques.
- Degree in Electrical/Software/Systems Engineering or equivalent.
- Chartered Engineer status or working towards chartership.
What we offer:
- Competitive salary
- 25 days holiday
- Pension scheme with contributions up to 9%
- Private medical insurance
- Personal Accident insurance
- Group Income protection
- Group Life Insurance
- Employee Assistance Programme
We also offer additional perks for you to choose from within a flexible plan that will meet your specific needs and lifestyle.
