Here at Hitachi Rail, we have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and self‑motivated Wheel Lathe Technician to join our team at the North Pole Train Maintenance Centre in London.
Salary: £43,375 with 15% shift allowance, £6,000 location allowance, permanent contract.
Accountabilities
- Operate and maintain the wheel lathe and carry out associated activities that support the operations of the wheel lathe.
- This is a permanent role working on a rotating shift basis.
- Maintain the condition of the work site, materials and equipment.
- Support health and safety practices in the workplace.
- Prepare for and undertake planned maintenance on the wheel lathe & ancillary equipment.
- Carry out wheel turning for Hitachi and third‑party rolling stock.
- Post operation checks and adjustments.
- Confirm that traction and rolling stock assets comply with operational specifications.
- Provide operational support to fleet staff if lathe duties permit.
- Develop professionally and support good working relationships.
- Learn new skills in accordance with Hitachi’s new business demands as required.
- Liaise with Hitachi and external personnel as required to complete the duties of the post.
Required Skills / Knowledge
- Experience in Milling, Turning, CNC, or similar experience.
- Sound knowledge of, and adherence to, rules and regulations.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
Education / Qualifications
- M&E ONC or served apprenticeship with mechanical, electrical disciplines.
- Engineering based NVQ level 3 or 2.
Behavioral

- Able to represent Hitachi Rail professionally at all times.
