We have a great opportunity for an enthusiastic self‑motivated Wheel Lathe Technician to join our team at North Pole Train Maintenance Centre in London. Salary: £43,375, with a 15% shift allowance and a £6,000 location allowance. Permanent contract on a rotating shift basis.
Responsibilities
- Operate and maintain the wheel lathe and perform associated activities that support its operation.
- Maintain the condition of the work site, materials and equipment.
- Support health and safety practices in the workplace.
- Prepare for and undertake planned maintenance on the wheel lathe and ancillary equipment.
- Carry out wheel turning for Hitachi and third‑party rolling stock.
- Conduct post‑operation checks and adjustments.
- Confirm that traction and rolling stock assets comply with operational specifications.
- Provide operational support to fleet staff if lathe duties permit.
- Develop professionally and support good working relationships.
- Learn new skills in accordance with Hitachi’s new business demands as required.
- Liaise with Hitachi and external personnel to complete the duties of the post.
Required Skills and Knowledge
- Milling/Turning/CNC or similar experience.
- Sound knowledge of and compliance with rules and regulations.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
Education and Qualifications
- M & E ONC or served apprenticeship in mechanical, electrical disciplines.
- Engineering‑based NVQ level 3 or 2.
Behavioural Attributes
- Calm and diplomatic under pressure.
- Loyal, committed, confident and determined.
- Good team worker.
- Able to represent Hitachi in a professional manner at all times.

- Intermediate IT skills – typically Word, Excel.
