We have a great opportunity for an enthusiastic self‑motivated Wheel Lathe Technician to join our team at North Pole Train Maintenance Centre in London. Salary: £43,375, with a 15% shift allowance and a £6,000 location allowance. Permanent contract on a rotating shift basis.

Responsibilities

  • Operate and maintain the wheel lathe and perform associated activities that support its operation.
  • Maintain the condition of the work site, materials and equipment.
  • Support health and safety practices in the workplace.
  • Prepare for and undertake planned maintenance on the wheel lathe and ancillary equipment.
  • Carry out wheel turning for Hitachi and third‑party rolling stock.
  • Conduct post‑operation checks and adjustments.
  • Confirm that traction and rolling stock assets comply with operational specifications.
  • Provide operational support to fleet staff if lathe duties permit.
  • Develop professionally and support good working relationships.
  • Learn new skills in accordance with Hitachi’s new business demands as required.
  • Liaise with Hitachi and external personnel to complete the duties of the post.

Required Skills and Knowledge

  • Milling/Turning/CNC or similar experience.
  • Sound knowledge of and compliance with rules and regulations.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.

Education and Qualifications

  • M & E ONC or served apprenticeship in mechanical, electrical disciplines.
  • Engineering‑based NVQ level 3 or 2.

Behavioural Attributes

  • Calm and diplomatic under pressure.
  • Loyal, committed, confident and determined.
  • Good team worker.
  • Able to represent Hitachi in a professional manner at all times.

Desired Skills (Not Essential)

  • Intermediate IT skills – typically Word, Excel.
  • Milling/Turning/CNC or similar experience.
  • Network Rail Sentinel PTS.
  • Depot driving and shunting.
  • Wheel Lathe operations and maintenance.
