Job Summary Location: Birmingham, England, United Kingdom (remote work enabled). Position: Legal Counsel - Transactional, major construction & energy projects. Full-time.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide legal advice and support to project teams on high-value, complex tenders and projects, including HVDC interconnectors, offshore and onshore substations.
- Draft, review and negotiate EPC agreements, standard construction contracts (JCT, NEC, FIDIC) and bespoke agreements to ensure compliance with Hitachi Group directives.
- Contribute to the review of RFQs/ITTs and tender preparation, risk identification and framework agreement negotiation.
- Offer legal support during sales, execution and warranty phases, aiding dispute avoidance and early conflict management.
- Develop group directives and instructions, assist with implementation of local legislation and integrity policies.
- Manage external service providers, including external legal counsel, when necessary.
- Deliver legal training and awareness on contract negotiation and integrity matters.
Required Qualifications
- Qualified solicitor or equivalent jurisdiction, minimum 5 years post-qualification experience in construction and energy projects.
- Proven experience drafting, reviewing and negotiating construction and engineering contracts, including EPC, sub-contracts and consultancy agreements.
- Strong knowledge of standard form contracts such as JCT, NEC, FIDIC.
- Experience managing or supporting construction disputes, adjudication, arbitration or litigation.
- Commercial acumen and ability to balance legal risk with business objectives.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Capacity to work independently, manage diverse workload in a fast‑paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with cross‑jurisdictional projects and collaboration with international legal teams.
- Knowledge of Hitachi Group risk management governance framework.
- Experience with contractual frameworks for HVDC interconnectors and grid.
