As Lead Commissioning Engineer within our Grid & Power Quality Solutions Service business, you will be responsible for leading and coordinating all site-based commissioning activities across assigned projects within the Grid Integration business. This role ensures safe, effective, and compliant execution of commissioning work, supporting Site Commissioning Engineers and overseeing site teams in accordance with company EHS and Quality Policies.
Location: Remote with occasional visits to Birmingham office and client locations UK/ EU as required. Also note we are unable to provide visa sponsorship for this position.
How You’ll Make An Impact- Responsibilities
- Site Leadership & Coordination: Supervise, allocate, and coordinate daily commissioning activities for all site-based teams and sub-contractors. Interface regularly with Site Lead Commissioning Engineers, ensuring commissioning tasks are duly planned, executed, and tracked. Organise, schedule, and manage resources (personnel, equipment) across the site portfolio.
- Technical Delivery: Oversee commissioning execution (such as secondary injection, primary injection, functional testing, energisation, and handover) for LV and HV equipment up to 400kV at substations and offshore platforms. Develop, review, and maintain commissioning schedules in coordination with Site Leads and Project Manager. Support the preparation, review, and control of inspection and test plans, commissioning documentation, and procedures.
- Reporting & Communication: Provide daily/weekly progress reports to the Department Commissioning Manager regarding Safety, Quality, Time, and Cost status. Communicate issues, risks, non-conformances, and proposed solutions to site teams and project management. Liaise with suppliers, vendors, manufacturers, and other engineering teams as required.
- Continuous Improvement: Capture lessons learned, support development of standard procedures, and promote a culture of continuous improvement within site commissioning activities.
- Bachelor’s Degree or above in electrical engineering or similar.
- Five years (plus) of working experience with commissioning of Substations.
- Substantial commissioning experience for grid/substation projects, including hands-on execution and team management.
- Demonstrated knowledge of site safety and commissioning practices (LV and HV, up to 400kV).
- Strong understanding of inspection and test methods (secondary/primary injection, functional testing).
- Excellent communication, team leadership, and scheduling skills.
- Experience with reporting tools and commissioning documentation systems.
- Experience in using Microsoft 365 (Excel, Word, etc.) and good experience in using Microsoft Project or similar tools for developing commissioning schedules.
