Hitachi Rail is seeking a dedicated and skilled Technical Riding Inspector to support the safety, reliability and performance of Hitachi’s rolling stock assets. The role is based in Bristol and is a permanent position working on a rotating shift pattern.

Responsibilities

  • Undertake fault finding, diagnostics, and repairs on Hitachi rolling stock both in passenger service and at outstations/depots as required.
  • Support the Maintenance Control team and collaborate with customers to establish operational desks within the Rail Maintenance Control Centre.
  • Advise customer operational staff to minimise service delays and improve overall performance.
  • Travel across the network as directed by the Hitachi Control Room to meet trains in service.
  • Utilise a 4G tablet, diagnostic laptop and hand tools to complete and accurately record all maintenance work.
  • Liaise with Network Rail staff and other key stakeholders as required.
  • Ensure traction and rolling stock assets meet operational specifications using established engineering processes.
  • Maintain accurate and up‑to‑date records within the SAP system.
  • Read and interpret technical drawings and specifications for rolling stock and traction systems.
  • Prepare for and carry out removal and replacement of components.
  • Modify or manufacture components using appropriate hand tools and engineering techniques.
  • Install new components in accordance with engineering standards.
  • Identify, assess and rectify defects and discrepancies on rolling stock assets.
  • Recognise repeat faults and contribute to sustainable repair solutions.
  • Develop technical scopes of work for fault resolution by other team members.
  • Provide technical support during in‑service failures when on duty.
  • Adhere to all health, safety, environmental and quality standards.
  • Support continuous professional development and foster strong working relationships.
  • Learn new skills in line with evolving business requirements.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders to fulfil role requirements.

Qualifications

Required Skills / Knowledge

  • Proven experience in stock-specific maintenance and fault diagnosis.
  • Full UK Driving Licence.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team while making decisions under pressure.
  • Strong understanding of, and adherence to, industry rules and regulations.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Professional approach when representing Hitachi Rail at all times.

Education / Qualifications

  • HNC in Mechanical & Electrical Engineering or completion of a relevant engineering apprenticeship.
  • NVQ Level 3 in an engineering discipline.

Desired Skills (not essential)

  • Intermediate IT skills (e.g. Microsoft Word, Excel).
  • Previous experience in train inspection, maintenance, or a similar technical role.

  • Salary: £62,325 per annum plus a 15% shift allowance (£3,000).
