Salary: £43,696 + 15% shift allowance (£6,000) + location allowance. Permanent contract.

Job Overview: Hitachi Rail is looking for enthusiastic and self‑motivated Maintenance Technicians to join our team at the North Pole Train Maintenance Centre in London. This role offers an entry point into the rail industry with no previous railway experience required, focusing on scheduled maintenance of modern Class 800 rolling stock supporting the Intercity Express Programme (IEP) on the GWR West Main Line.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform scheduled maintenance activities on the rolling stock in accordance with vehicle maintenance instructions.
  • Undertake servicing and preparation of the rolling stock.
  • Undertake driving duties within depot confines in accordance with depot operating procedures and instructions.
  • Actively participate in continuous improvement activities for maintenance processes and procedures that support all depot and fleet activities.
  • Support the delivery of new trains and undertake the maintenance acceptance processes.
  • Ensure exam tasks are completed in a timely manner, undertaking basic fault rectification or repair where required.
  • Adhere to all health and safety processes and procedures.
  • Attend testing locations, main line stations and outstations to undertake preventive and corrective maintenance as required.
  • Prepare to travel and stay overnight away from base location for short periods.
  • Support Maintenance Team Leaders and Shift Production Managers in delivering the production plan.
  • Record all work activities and stock consumption using the maintenance management system in accordance with maintenance processes and procedures.
  • Work shifts to meet the service requirements of fleet customers.
  • Assist with any other responsibilities relevant to the role as required.

Qualifications & Skills Required:

  • Experience working a 24/7 shift roster in a modern rolling stock maintenance depot environment.
  • Outstanding safety awareness gained in an operational railway engineering environment.
  • Experience working at stabling outstations or main line station technical support.
  • Modern fault finding and repair techniques using PC‑based laptops and remote train diagnostics.
  • Reading electrical, pneumatic, mechanical schematics and drawings (requires extensive experience).
  • Experience with modern maintenance management systems (MMS) and associated reliability and availability trend analysis.
  • Experience performing modifications and campaigns on modern rolling stock.
  • Completed apprenticeship in mechanical and/or electrical disciplines.
  • Engineering NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent).
  • Calm, professional and diplomatic under pressure.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Confidence in collaborative work with stakeholders at all levels.
  • Loyal, committed, proactive and determined approach to work.

Desired:

  • Ability to investigate complex electrical and mechanical faults and write detailed reports.
  • Intermediate IT skills – Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook.
  • Train driving, fire warden, first aid, powered plant and tools – bogie drop, cranes, air systems / 110V tools.
  • Train driving assessment and licence.
  • Depot protection: working at height, COSHH, manual handling, AC/DC depot isolation, Network Rail Sentinel, PTS.
