Hitachi Energy is looking to hire a Senior Protection Engineer to design and produce high-quality protection engineering solutions for Hitachi Energy as we respond to a rapidly developing renewable energy sector. You’ll use your knowledge and expertise to understand customer specifications and identify improvements, whilst maximizing efficiency and minimizing project risk. Providing you with fresh new challenges and the opportunity to manage detailed protection engineering design projects of varying degrees of complexity.

You will work in close consultation with the customer, contract project manager, and wider Hitachi team. Drawing from specialist experience from within Grid Automation, you will devise protection engineering solutions tailored to our client’s specifications. Using the latest software, you’ll execute detailed designs within agreed-upon timescales, scoped out within budget, applying quality standards and Health & Safety requirements.

You will know how to handle customers on technical issues as a trusted expert and be comfortable interacting with official contacts and contractors as you proactively provide expertise and guidance and take a leading role. How you'll make an impact:

  • Prepare functional design specifications and project scope documents
  • Prepare protection designs for production and manufacturing
  • Protection product selection, IED configurations, and protection IEC61850 engineering
  • Developing new protection solutions encompassing the full development cycle control (concept design to delivery)
  • Type registration and product approval – combining engineering and documentation
  • Provide technical support during the pre-FAT and FAT stages, handling installation and commissioning activities
  • Assist in preparing proposal/presentation of engineering projects/programs (provision of bills of materials, estimated engineering hours, etc.)
  • Commercial awareness and support project management in issuing claims (new/change in scope of work, cost impact, time impact, risk quantifications, etc.)

Your Background:

  • Proven years within the electrical engineering sector, particularly the grid automation sector
  • Strong foundation in transmission of transmission (within the energy sector)
  • HND or a Degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Membership (or working towards membership) of a relevant professional body, eg, CEng
  • Strong design capability and experience in the engineering discipline of Power Systems
  • Project coordination and operates well within a team
  • Fluent in both spoken and written English, and good communication skills
