The Historic Towns Trust is an educational charity that creates authoritative historical maps showing the development of Britain’s towns and cities over time. Our work supports education, research, and public understanding of urban history across England, Wales and Scotland, and is used by universities, schools, museums, planners and heritage organisations.

The Charity Secretary plays a key role in ensuring the Trust is well governed, compliant and well organised, supporting the Board of Trustees and helping the charity operate effectively.

Core governance responsibilities include:

  • Preparing agendas and papers for trustee meetings.
  • Taking accurate minutes and maintaining records of decisions.
  • Managing statutory filings for the Charity Commission.
  • Ensuring governing documents, policies and registers are kept up to date.
  • Acting as a point of contact for trustees on governance and compliance matters.

Partnerships, Licensing & Intellectual Property (Administrative Oversight)

The Secretary will act as the Trust’s internal point of contact for partnership agreements, map licensing arrangements and intellectual property administration. The Trust works with an external solicitor on all legal drafting, contract negotiation and intellectual property advice. The Secretary’s role is to coordinate, maintain records and ensure continuity, rather than provide legal advice.

Responsibilities include:

  • Maintaining a register of partnership and licensing agreements.
  • Monitoring key dates, renewals and contractual obligations.
  • Coordinating with trustees and the Trust’s external solicitor as required.
  • Supporting the administration of intellectual property, including trade mark renewals.
