Location: Longmore House, Edinburgh with hybrid working

Working Hours: Monday – Friday, 18.2 hours per week with the option of a temporary increase to 28 hours per week until 30 June 2027

Your role will be to support Historic Environment Scotland’s Heritage Directorate’s Planning, Consents & Advisory Service’s work in relation to scheduled monuments. You will prepare and present cases for triage, research and advise on proposals for Scheduled Monument Consent and planning consent, and work with monument owners and managers to improve the condition of scheduled monuments.

Key Responsibilities of this role:

  • General advice on historic environment issues and casework
  • Preparing and presenting cases for triage and casework allocation within the Ancient Monuments and Environmental Assessment teams.
  • Assisting with Scheduled Monument Consent applications and other monuments related enquiries/consultations
  • Assisting with planning, agri-environment, and other related consultations
  • Assisting with consultations relating to Inventory Battlefield sites
  • Co-ordinating and providing general advice on the historic environment, as necessary.
  • Researching and collating historical, architectural/archaeological information
  • Background research and administration for the preparation of briefings, Merit Assessments for grants, site visits, letters to public etc
  • Deputising for senior Ancient Monuments Officers as required.
  • Supporting the work of the Heritage Directorate more widely, particularly through the provision of advice to developers, owners and planning authorities and the assessment of impacts from development proposals on the historic environment
  • Such other appropriate duties as may from time to time be allocated by line managers.

Key requirements of the role:

In order for you to be successful in this post, we will be looking for you to submit a cover letter which addresses how you can meet each of the essential and desirable criteria (in up to 1,200 words), using examples of where you have demonstrated these criteria previously. Essential:

  • Strong working knowledge of Scotland’s historic environment, and particularly its archaeology, in its wider context
  • Good working knowledge of Historic Environment legislation and policy, and its application within the planning system
  • Experience of working in the historic environment sector, particularly within archaeology, and cultural resource management
  • Experience delivering professional expert advice based on strong knowledge of Scotland’s historic environment, and archaeology in particular.
  • Ability to work with a range of external partners and stakeholders.
  • Access to a means of transport to travel throughout Scotland, including to remote, rural locations.
