The London Market tech team is a modern, agile technology department seeking to work as closely as possible with our colleagues across the company to deliver true business value in an agile fashion.
We are a group of engineers (Software, Data, Quality, Platform), data scientists and agile practitioners.
We organise ourselves into chapters according to these professional disciplines.
You would be joining our Software Engineering Chapter.
From these chapters we build cross-functional squads aimed at delivering business value in particular areas.
These are tight-knit Scrum teams working closely with product owners and business stakeholders to determine what insights are required and working to deliver them.
Our engineers are enthusiastic in applying technology to drive results and advocate for appropriate solutions.
The role
We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic professional who will be a key and influential member of our Hiscox London Market Engineering Team, within the Software Engineering Chapter.
In this role you will be working in one of our various squads as we create new “Cloud First” solutions to add value to the business, while supporting and transforming our existing on-prem and cloud systems.
We are looking for someone who is aligned with modern software engineering practices and ready to embrace the use of AI enabled development tool and adapt to the ever changing space as we enter the agentic SDLC phase to allow rapid delivery of high quality value.
Key Responsibilities
- Work collaboratively with your squad and stakeholders, taking a technical leading role in shaping and delivering business outcomes.
- Write and review clean, maintainable code, guiding others on best practices such as SOLID principles, design patterns, unit testing, peer reviews, and CI/CD processes.
- Ensure documentation is accurate and up to date, and mentor team members on maintaining high-quality story documentation and technical clarity.
- Actively support and mentor team members by sharing knowledge, providing guidance, and fostering a culture of continuous learning.
- Guide and contribute to solution design, working closely with stakeholders to translate requirements into scalable and maintainable implementations.
- Collaborate with engineers across teams to influence and evolve our architecture, promoting best practices and alignment.
- Champion security and engineering standards, ensuring your work and that of the team adheres to organisational guidelines.
- Adopt new ways of working, including AI-assisted development tools, and help the team navigate the evolving engineering landscape, including the move towards an agentic SDLC.
- Foster effective collaboration with distributed teams across the United Kingdom, Portugal, Poland, and India, promoting alignment and consistency in delivery.
Skills
- Candidates should hold an academic degree in a related field (or 5+ years employment in a Software Engineering role), demonstrating increasing responsibility in delivery and technical decision-making.
- They should have strong, hands-on experience in C# and . NET, with the ability to design, develop, and review high-quality code, and in writing effective unit tests.
- They should have a strong background in SQL, with proven experience in designing, optimising, and maintaining databases in production environments.
- They should have solid experience with CI/CD pipelines and a strong understanding of source control systems and branching strategies, with the ability to influence and improve team practices.
- Experience with Azure technologies such as Azure Functions, Azure SQL, Azure Storage, Azure API Management (APIM) and Azure Service Bus, especially in designing and implementing event-driven or messaging-based architectures.
- Familiarity with modern front-end technologies such as Blazor, Angular, or React is beneficial, with the ability to contribute to or guide the development of responsive user interfaces.
