Location: London based – minimum of 2 days in the office

Background

We are hiring a senior natural catastrophe research analyst to support our analytical capabilities and growth across the Hiscox Group. This is an opportunity to join a strategic, technologically focused team influencing risk management at the highest level.

The Team

The Group Exposure Management team is part of the wider Underwriting Risk and Reinsurance team, reporting to the group CUO. We work closely with catastrophe modelling and capital management teams to understand underwriting risk across the group.

  • Ensure catastrophe exposures are understood, measured, communicated, and aligned with internal and external appetites.
  • Manage and embed the Hiscox View of Risk for Natural Catastrophe risk, including non-natural perils.
  • Ensure best practices in catastrophe risk analysis and regulatory compliance.
  • Support reinsurance purchasing and provide inputs to risk/capital teams.

The Role

The Senior Natural Catastrophe Analyst will support the Group Exposure Management\’s work on natural catastrophe perils, delivering research and exposure management to incorporate latest scientific and industry knowledge into the Hiscox View of Risk. Responsibilities include climate change research, model validation, scenario design, and portfolio optimisation. The role offers visibility across various business functions and levels.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the Hiscox view of risk for natural catastrophes, ensuring alignment with risk appetite and validation.
  • Deliver research projects including catastrophe model validations and regulatory documentation.
  • Lead projects to improve risk understanding.
  • Fulfil natural catastrophe regulatory obligations.
  • Provide catastrophe risk expertise to stakeholders.
  • Represent the exposure management function internally.
  • Stay updated on scientific and market developments.
  • Represent Hiscox at industry events and establish research connections.
  • Foster a culture of continuous learning.

Person Specification

  • 2+ years experience in insurance, with knowledge of catastrophe modelling systems (e.g., Moody’s, Verisk EES).
  • Strong scientific and business judgment, interest in natural hazards.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Technical coding aptitude (SQL, R, Python preferred but not essential).
  • Teamwork and stakeholder relationship skills.
  • Organised and deadline-oriented.

Nice to have

  • Experience with capital modelling.
  • Masters or PhD in atmospheric sciences, geosciences, engineering, or related fields.
  • Experience evaluating catastrophe models.
