The role
As a Data Scientist at Hiscox, you will have the opportunity to apply your skills to a wide range of business problems as part of a core team of data scientists, engineers, and analysts. We operate in small teams adopting an Agile approach with a 2-week review cycle. Our goal is to deliver business value using an MVP approach that will scale to a fully developed solution.
You will work with various stakeholders to identify new opportunities in decisioning (new business and policy management), intent, pricing, and monitoring. We operate across multiple business functions, solving diverse problems with changing contexts.
We are looking for hands-on Data Scientists who are good communicators and enjoy working in a team environment. You will deliver data science solutions and help the business understand the opportunities data science offers.
This role is ideal for someone passionate about using Data Science to influence decisions and eager to learn how to deliver value through data. You will conceptualize new approaches, communicate visions clearly to stakeholders, and implement them effectively.
Key Responsibilities
- Apply data science product lifecycle principles to new projects (Design, exploratory data analysis, building, evaluation, deployment, monitoring, and maintenance)
- Develop, monitor, and manage production data science models (retraining, optimizing, upgrading)
- Work on end-to-end data solutions, understanding complex business challenges, designing scientific solutions, and working with diverse data sets, including third-party data, using advanced machine learning or statistical techniques
- Collaborate with data scientists, data engineers, and other technical teams, including pricing teams, to mature analytics practices
- Write high-quality Python code following industry best practices for model training and deployment
- Continuously develop knowledge, researching new techniques and technologies, and sharing insights with the team
Must Haves
- Experience or strong interest in data science, advanced analytics
- Ability to conduct high-quality research independently and in small teams
- Familiarity with version control and IT delivery tools
- Understanding of applying machine learning to solve business problems
- Experience in predictive and prescriptive analysis, deriving insights, and articulating findings
- Excellent written and presentation skills
- Willingness to learn software development best practices, including TDD (pytest or similar)
Nice to Haves
- Graduate or postgraduate qualification in relevant disciplines (engineering, mathematics, physics, statistics)
- Experience in finance, insurance, or e-commerce data science
- Experience deploying in cloud environments
- Knowledge of neural networks, TensorFlow, CatBoost, XGBoost, SKlearn, Pandas
- Experience with API development, SQL, software engineering, CI/CD
