Responsibilities

  • Manage a portfolio of professional indemnity and management liability claims with values up to £100k.
  • Demonstrate customer focus throughout the claims lifecycle, engaging stakeholders and striving for a positive outcome.
  • Investigate and manage claims from initial notification to closure, including third-party claims from pre-litigation through final settlement.
  • Review and confirm policy coverage positions, increasing confidence in in-house decisions.
  • Set claim strategy, handle in-house pre-litigation where possible, and implement claim prevention strategies.
  • Select, instruct, and actively manage law firms and experts, ensuring proactive indemnity and cost control.
  • Liaise and negotiate with clients, brokers, claimants and their representatives, attending mediations, JSMs, and court hearings.
  • Manage the claims portfolio against the CUG and relevant KPIs and SLAs, proactively identifying fraudulent claims and recovery opportunities.
  • Identify trends and concerns, reporting to stakeholders through quarterly updates and internal training sessions.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with internal stakeholders—underwriters, product and sector heads, customer relations, wording, conduct—showing commercial awareness.
  • Build and sustain external stakeholder relationships—insureds, brokers, law firms—demonstrating commercial awareness.
  • Provide technical advice on coverage, strategy, and reallocation based on DAs’ referrals.
  • Assist the continuous improvement of the claims operation, embracing new technologies such as Co-Pilot and digital tools.
  • Participate in group, UK, or claims-wide projects and change programmes, offering SME assistance as agreed with management.

Candidate Profile

  • Newly qualified solicitors with commercial litigation experience or candidates with claims handling backgrounds.
  • Experience in claims handling or a comparable role within a legal or insurance environment.
  • Professional qualifications relevant to claims handling—Solicitor, CILEX, equivalent, or CII.
  • Experience or exposure to professional indemnity and/or management liability claims, or transferability from commercial litigation.
  • Sound understanding of pre-action protocols and commercial litigation processes.
  • Ability to proactively manage a caseload and make autonomous decisions on policy coverage and claim resolution.
  • Proven stakeholder management across clients, brokers, legal partners, and internal teams.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, confidence in challenging conversations, and clear outcome delivery.
  • Excellent organisational skills managing a varied workload across diverse claim complexities.
  • Some experience in Employment Tribunal dispute resolution is advantageous but not essential.
